You won’t be too old. It’ll look favorable to go in house and go back to a firm— they may want the business as a client. I’ve seen it done.
As a rising 6th year that’s been in-house for over 3 years, I get emails from firms allllll the time
You’ll be too old
I did the opposite. I did a year fellowship in house before going to a firm. I got credit for my year, and it was treated similar to a clerkship. But I also marketed myself as a tool for bringing business over from the Company. I negotiated a percentage of credit for the business I brought over and work as the relationship manager between the firm and the client. It would depend on the in-house position and the law firm, but I would assume most big law and AM200 firms would consider it a positive.
Just anecdotally, I know of someone at my firm who did this: left as a senior litigation associate to go in house, spent a couple years there, and came back as a partner. Now she's one of the heads of the practice group that focuses in that area and has continued to be successful. I'm sure there are others like her who have done the same. It's all about how you can use your experience to help bring in business.
