I am curious about NALS and NALA. My understanding is that NALA has more of a Mid-West & East Coast presence and NALS is disbursed throughout the US and has regional (state) and local (within state) sub-chapters. If you're a member of either/both- do you attend local and national events? What is the vibe you get from the conventions/meetings? As a newbie, were you welcomed into the fold, or did you have to push to be accepted?

I’m a NALA ACP/CAS. And NALA membership is national and world wide. There are state and local associations like NALS. I chose to pursue the NALA credential as NALA offers (in my opinion) more educational opportunities within the association. I’ve also been to several conventions and have enjoyed them. Took a cross country train trip in 2023 and will also take a train trip to the Denver convention. And the vibe is pretty fun!

I agree. Have you tried Perfectly Paralegal? Sometimes we can get free CLE’s there (not often) but she charges a lot less than others. Why not give her a try. I love it.

I would love to be a part of NALA but here in southwest Ohio, it isn't worth the expense. I haven't heard of a single position in any area of law that is willing to compensate you for being part of NALA, or even being certified.

I have 10+ years experience and never heard back from NALA after I applied, so I wonder if it's an organization where you need to know somebody to get in? The one person I do know that's part of it is pretty cringe.

So I have my bachelors in criminal justice and I just finished my paralegal certificate course today. My attorney should be making partner this year. With that being said I told her that I would complete my certificate by the summer around the time she would make partner. Should I mention to her Monday that I completed my paralegal certificate in hopes that the raise will be bigger or should I wait until June when she makes partner.thoughts?

For those of you who made the switch to in house/corporate law, what was your experience like? Did you have to take a lower position to gain the experience or were you able to argue that your soft skills were transferable to in house? I did it! I got an in-house Paralegal position after years of working and being burned out at different law firms. Prayerfully, this transition will be a good one.

My boss (atty) is so disorganized! I’ve been with him 6 months and he’s having a hard time delegating, sharing info and managing deadlines. I’ve organized the caseload to manage the deadlines. He says he wants me to help with discovery but when I offer to start on one, he says he needs to do it. (Since he might have to present as evidence) When I give him deadlines and ask for the docs he says he’ll get to it. It’s a small 1 man firm, and I’m the first assistant besides his wife. Any advice?
