I am on paternity leave for another few weeks. But in advance of returning to work, any advice on getting back in the flow of things/transitioning back?

Things will never go back to the way they were. So don’t go into it thinking that after some amount of time, it’ll be back to normal.

But it’s a good thing. Life is better with kids.

There’s no one thing that works for schedules. Some people stay up later, others get up earlier.

There is one universal. Write down everything. If you do not, you will not remember.

I won’t lie: it’s tough if you’re a first-time parent. Now on our second child, we treat time with our kids like important meetings. Time is blocked off on our calendars for morning or bed time routines, school events, etc. We over-communicate about obligations, and manage and guard our time carefully. I work early or late at least a couple times a week to keep up. We are lucky enough to have an excellent nanny and we’re not sure how we could do it without her. The most important thing though is probably to manage expectations and, to the extent you have flexibility, to make sure you work with people that understand what having a family is like.

like

Yes, agree with all this advice. Also lucky to have an excellent nanny, and then we have an hour with our baby in the morning before work, and we carve out 5:30-8 every day for family time, dinner, and baby’s bedtime before logging back in to work. Blocking off that time has been huge.

like

Calendar time to do things. You don’t have the luxury of throwing extra hours at a problem, so you need to be ninja efficient

like

In a similar boat for a second baby. We’re getting an au pair to help with mornings (breakfast, getting dressed, drop offs) and pick ups (cooking, dinner).

BL life w/o au pair was hardly feasible with one kid and flex RTO so I don’t want to risk it with 2 kids and 4 day/week RTO (we live in suburbs).

All of this is appreciated! Also curious about actually getting back to work. Would this involve emailing folks a week or so before I return? Scheduling time to get work assigned back, etc,

This is the way^

I’m scared I’ll end up being alone. I’ve truly enjoyed being single all this time but as time passes by, I keep thinking to myself that something must be wrong with me that I’m not in a relationship. I also don’t feel confident being on dating apps since I gained weight during the pandemic (about 30 lbs). I’m holding off on dating until I get into better shape but I’ll be 27 by then and I feel like I’ll be too old to put myself out there.

2) Am200 firm with 1750+ billable hour requirement, less reputable in the region because it’s a satellite office, pays $35k less than option 1

I'm a third year plaintiff's employment law attorney and I'm looking to move to defense, preferably still in employment law. I received an offer from a midsize firm that primarily focuses on PI with little-to-no employment law practice, so I'll have a bit of a learning curve. Offer is $90k, billable hours of 2100. Is this reasonable? I'm dead-set on leaving my current job, and this would be a $20k pay increase - which makes me believe I'm leaning towards taking it for those reasons only.

I’m so bad at writing the background/ facts section for briefs… it always gets heavily edited and no one is giving me constructive feedback other than “advocate more”. In contrast, my legal argument section is generally without edits. For context, first defense lit job post appellate clerkship. Is this normal?? Any tips for getting better other than “advocating more”?
