Im not searching for a new job but an acquaintance reached out about a similar role at a similar energy company.Turns out 2 ppl threw my name in the hat. I looked into it and the position was posted 2 weeks ago.Their director wants to meet.I bet pay is one of the first things to be discussed so that no one’s time is wasted.Am I crazy for not wanting to entertain it for less than 20-25% base pay increase? Is it selfish to ask for more? I’m sure most salary conversations end in negotiation anyways?

Your time away from insurance should have no effect on the salary that you require. If you know how to do the job and you'll do it well then you should expect the salary that is commensurate with that. You are already seeing yourself as less than deserving a full salary. With that attitude you will not get the salary you want. Value yourself a little bit more and own what you can deliver for the new company. Good luck.

To echo that, your skills and experience didn't go away, speak to them confidently during interviews, and don't even call out the break.
In that same vein, it is entirely common for people to switch industries or to a totally new kind of role entirely, and make the mid to high range for their new role because they demonstrated that their cumulative experience enables them to do the new job well. I did exactly that, and make more in the new position than the one that I left having 2 decades of experience.
The industry hasn't changed. Treat those years of experience as if they were in use now.
