I was told when studying journalism in university that the silence is important because lesser people will try to fill in the gaps. A Good journalist is comfortable in silence and what is not said.
That is such a good reminder. Silence feels like panic in the moment, but it is often the space that brings the most honest answers
Think about the most thoughtful things you've said during your life. Did they happen off the cuff, or did you have to put some real thought into them? I would assume the latter. The same holds true while interviewing. Don't break the silence and interrupt their concentration, tempting as it is. Let them think things through so they can give the best possible answer.
True, the best answers rarely come instantly. I need to remind myself that the pause is not rejection, it is just thinking time
That silence can feel endless, but sometimes it’s exactly where the best answers live. It sounds like you handled it really well — that takes confidence and trust in your instincts.
