I call upon the construction law fish! I need advice. I'm in insurance defense now trying to continue my specialty. It's hard because I get thrown into almost every case. I came from a midsize in a different state and moved bc I got married. A well-respected boutique approached me about joining their growing construction practice. They get a lot of work from large developers. Should I make the move if the money is right? I like my current firm - it's not perfect but I get along with (cont)

Sounds like a great opportunity and gets you out of ID (which I’m sure gave you great experience to take into this new opportunity)

Yes! I have been getting great experience here, and it helped me learn the laws in my new state. I have been trying to build up the construction practice, and it looks like we are starting to get some defect cases... it's been 2 years though and I think it's harder to build a book here if you're so insurance focused. I guess I just feel bad because I get along with the people here, but the idea of getting back into what I did before sounds appealing.

I get along with everyone. But I feel like the career opportunity is better with this other boutique. I know the owner of the boutique - he gave me advice when I was new to town and we stayed in touch. What do you think?

Comforting others:
When someone tells me bad news regarding their health, I say everything I am supposed to say (I’m sorry to hear that, I’m here for you, etc) EXCEPT “everything is going to be ok”. Because I can’t guarantee that and I really don’t know if everything is going to be ok. I was taken aback recently when a friend told me I am calloused and cold-hearted for not being able to say those words. Is she right? Should I start saying this for the purposes of providing comfort only??

I am an Audit S1 that wants to work in a B4 Forensics practice. Would it be best for me to accept an offer in Forensics at a much smaller firm (local, 150ish total employees) to gain experience and then try to move to B4 Forensics? Or should I stay in Audit and wait for B4 Forensics positions to open up? Please let me know your thoughts!

I have an interview for an in house position (only attorney) at a small non-profit focused on conservation easements. I am a transactional associate at a mid sized law firm. The prospect of freedom from the billable hour and contributing to meaningful work are the draws. The cons are that while the salary at the non-profit would only be slightly less than what I am making now, pay increases and opportunities for advancement will be much less than where I am now. Thoughts on making the shift?
