The risk to you by staying is that they're aware you are willing (and potentially still aiming) to leave. They weren't willing to let you walk.... that quickly. Now they have time to create contingencies or even recruit someone else at 90K and let you go.
And have you train the new person and let you go with no notice. Sorry, but that happens.
When a company only amplifies your worth after you’ve packed your bags, it calls into question how they measure contribution, how they handle retention, and how deeply they listen. That feeling you have? That nagging sense of being valued only when leaving—it’s valid, and it’s wise to pay attention to it.
Yes, you love the people. Yes, the work-life balance is healthy. But compensation is not just a paycheck—it’s a signal of respect, appreciation, and investment in your future. If that respect only surfaces in crisis, it may not be sustainable.
Before deciding, ask yourself:
Will staying rebuild your trust in leadership?
Is this counteroffer part of a long-term plan, or a short-term fix?
Do you have clarity and transparency around future growth?
If you decide to stay, make sure you get more than a number. Ask for a written plan for advancement. Confirm that this isn’t just a rescue move—it’s a commitment.
But if you walk away, walk with your head high. Not out of anger, but out of alignment. Sometimes honoring yourself means leaving comfort for clarity.
I agree with this 100%
I would love to know what you decided?
Work Life Balance is hard to find. Stay where you are and if it starts to get bad, now you know what you are worth.
Tell the new one you have a few more things you’d like to accomplish at the original place (sounds altruistic) and keep in touch with them.
Congratulations, that is a chunk of money in a raise.
I think they do value to offer so much more but were trying to be cheap for as long as they could.
I was in similar situation and stayed. The bad think about it that you can say Baye Bye to future large or any increases because they will feel that they are paying you more $ than they want to. As for me, after staying with the same company for 10 years, everyone that moved elsewhere is making double what I am making and I still hear the same excuses from my current employer. I am now interviewing with other companies and I won't be interested in staying at all, eve n though I love the people!
The last school I worked at I was hired at 10K more than the last IT person.. I still got raises too. They just hired another person for 15K less! I also knew that my position had a ceiling, a hard bedrock, unbreakable ceiling ... not glass, bedrock, no room for growth.
I works lean towards staying. They’re times when an increase has to be justified. For some reasons most companies will NOT pay you your worth until you receive an offer elsewhere.
You must stop and think what is good for you 🙏
Everyone who commented has very valid points of view and legitimate reasons regarding whether to take the counteroffer or move forward with the new offer. I understand that the project manager wants our input on this matter, but the question you need to ask yourself is: are you truly satisfied in both good times and bad times with your current job? Take time to reflect on this and analyze everything you have been through with the job. We don’t know yours relationship with your job.
I hope you’re going to let us know what happened in the end.
I want to know as well. I don’t see one reply from OP.
I’ll take the new job that place gets rid of people like a bad habit as soon as they’re done using you.
If you don't think you will regret leaving, go for it. A new challenge is good to shake you up and expand your horizons. Do your research and ask all the right questions to get a sense of what you are walking into.
The last time I did that I should have just left. The company counter offered the same pay with a match of vac ,which was 4 weeks. One year later they gave out merit raises and I didn't receive one. There response was we give you a nice bump last year that should do you for the next couple of years. Ha ok okay I'll start looking again.
New job offer a year later and they came out and asked me what the pay was and can they make me a offer . No thanks , you pulled that last time see ya later
If they think that much of you , the company would have been paying you that wage before and you would not have been looking.
Always look to improve yourself you never know what you may find
If it were me Id stay. If you like the job and they are gonna give you way more money also.. who cares what made them realize they need you. As long as they did.
Go girl, that's crap with what your current co did!
Follow your instinct. They Under valued you ... I don't trust your current employer....they have shown you who they really are. Walk! Take the New Job and start fresh with a company willing to pay your worth.
Wow that is so tough. If it were me and I liked where I was at, I would take the higher offer and stay. However, a change of pace might be what you need if you are feeling burned out.
Bro 130 and staying put is a great offer
Your current company has your salary history and may reduce future increases as a result. I think it best to leave once you indicate your first intentions. They could slow your future income growth
Tough one lol usually I say leave but that’s a fat counter.
Congrats on the offer!!!
I always say "Better the monster you know than the one you don't". Having said that if you like it where you are then was it the raise that upset you and you made an emotional decision? Plus if it is about money you accepted the position at the salary you agreed to so dont regret accepting it because it was what you wanted at that time. Don't work thinking everyone will notice because even if they do the company has a set budget and most companies aren't even doing raises nowadays. Flourish where you're at.
