I sympathize and hope so. Saving what you can and affording what you can is all one can do. Appreciate what you’ve got. That’s what I’ve been doing bc I know I’m not where I ought to be financially. But I’m better than 5 years ago and 10 years ago.
Small steps are better than no steps, I guess!
You'd be amazed at what can happen in the next 5-10 years. Just keep at it, you’ll be good. I significantly increased my salary and was able to play “catch up” or at least I feel like I have.
Thanks. I hope that is the case!
You are exactly where you are supposed to be and there is no other life but the one you are living right now. Don't compare your trajectory to that of others. Nature does not hurry yet everything is accomplished. Trust that you are on the path that is meant for you and walk it with confidence. You will get to where you need to be in time.
Thank you.
Nope. I'm in similar boat and still feel like I'm playing catch up 8 years later post career change.
That is scary... I hope that soon you feel like you have caught up!
Our culture doesn’t reward waiting or patience we want it all right now and better than everyone else. That’s just not how it works!!! As an attorney, I hope you are making good money, spending wisely and moving forward. If you are working in public service, kudos to you. But if you are trying to have it all right out of the gate, life will be challenging. I just think it’s harder for people to move ahead than it used to be for many of our parents. Because so many things are so ridiculously expensive!
If you don't mind me asking how much do you make and do you live in a HCOL area? I know lawyers are on the higher end of the salary so it might take some sacrificing and making significant lifestyle changes to get you ahead.
My best friend is in law school right now and told me she had to take out $80k in students loans every year. I'm so sorry you all have to do this.
Yes, when you will start to make more money. It took me a few years, but luckily lawyer salaries increase significantly. Just try not to switch too many practice areas (otherwise you’ll be starting from zero each time), advocate for yourself when asking for raises, and be patient.
If the feeling subsides please let me know because I am wondering the same thing. I have about 300k in debt from grad school and then getting my PhD and it feels like I will never be able to pay it off.
