I got laid off yesterday, and I've already started looking up freelance contracts. I don't think I know how to process my emotions, that's why I'm in beast mode even though I don't actually have it in me. I woke up this morning with a heavy heart because I spent all my good years in this company, and all I got was a 'sorry, but we have to do what works for the business'. What's the healthiest way to get over what feels like a betrayal that you never saw coming?

I was just laid off myself, and I know exactly how rough it feels. Honestly, it’s totally okay to be in “beast mode” and throw yourself into freelance work as a distraction, but don’t forget to give yourself permission to actually feel what you’re feeling, too. You’ve invested so much into ends so abruptly, and it’s not weak to take a moment to grieve the loss. I’ve been talking it out with friends, writing down my thoughts, and going on a whole lot of walks..it helps a lot.

Forget prioritizing what's healthy, do whatever it is you need to to keep going. If that's going beast mode like you are now, that's a-okay. I've been enraged ever since I got let go after years of outperforming expectations with a shoestring budget and an understaffed team, and while I'm not going to pretend that's the healthiest approach, the fire it lit under me is the one thing keeping me strong through all of it.

It sounds like you are processing these feelings as you go. And that's healthy. A layoff is a rejection, even if we don't want to think of it that way. But it's not about you, it really is about things outside of your control. I would encourage you to write out these feelings and process them as they come, because ignoring them just means they will come out in other ways.

It wasn’t far off from a grieving process to me. At this point, it feels silly to say that, but that’s how I felt after it happened. Spent a lot of time with that company, and to just be let go like nothing is a lot to swallow. The healthiest thing is to work through it so that you are ready to go for the next opportunity that comes your way.

Just keep moving forward. Being laid off generally puts us in a pretty bad situation, and that takes precedence. What happened is already done, in time you'll know how you feel about it. But in the meantime it's good to take care of basics. File for unemployment (the sooner the better on that) and line up whatever work you can. And get moving on networking, be in touch with people you've worked with and put out feelers to find your next gig.

Being laid off is tough, and I'm sorry it happened to you. I'd recommend making a time to say all of your thoughts out loud with a friend. It's also a good idea to write out your career story start to finish... write out every part of your career that you can think of. This will help you process your feelings as well as change your perspective when you do the next step. Once you've written out your story, take a break, come back, and change every negative word to something more positive. Then, re-read your story start to finish. You might be happily surprised! I hope this helps... I know it can be hard to recover from being laid off. I think once you allow yourself to say whatever is on your mind, you'll start to feel better. Stay strong 🩵
