I had 1st job interview with HR & provided my last salary. In 2nd interview with the direct hiring manager I said my expected salary is 10-15% on top of my last. A week after 3rd interview with the hiring manager, HR offered salary which is 35% cut of my last salary. I counter offered 5% on top of my last. HR came back with a better offer but still 20% lower than my last salary as they have to match with existing range in the office. The reason seems a bit weird. Should I negotiate further?

Not sure why you provided your last salary. That’s usually a red flag for me if the company requires it. To me, you’re still about 30-35% below where you actually want to be. It will almost be impossible to make that difference up via negotiations. It’s likely they do have a salary band for the position, so you might not be in a feasible range. I’d cut your loses and keep interviewing elsewhere

I usually don’t disclose how much I make but rather what I’m looking for. But seems this company doesn’t have the budget

like

Why did you provide your last salary during your first interview? Was there a salary range listed on the job description when you first applied? I have read that some states require a good faith pay range to be listed on job descriptions.

When asked about your current salary, avoid providing a direct number to prevent limiting your negotiating power. Instead, focus on your expected salary based on market research, or ask for the company’s budget for the role. Frame your answer around the value you bring and the specific responsibilities of the new position.

Key Strategies to Answer:
Deflect with Expectations: "I’m looking for a position that pays between $ and $$$, based on my research of this role's responsibilities".
Focus on Value: "My current compensation is confidential, but I am looking for a package in the range of $X - $Ybased on the value I can bring to this role".

If Pushed, Use a Broad Range: If forced to provide a number, offer a wide range that starts at your desired minimum and goes higher
Turn the Question Around: "I’m more interested in finding the right fit, and I’m confident we can agree on a fair salary. What range do you have budgeted for this position?".

I hope you have continued your job search while you have been dealing with this. You can continue to negotiate if you want, but be prepared to walk away.

I dont' know that you will be able to negotiate further but it worth a try. It sounds like either way you are going to be making less than you were before. If you don't need the job, I think I would keep looking.

Hi Fishes,

I gave my various rounds of interview in Deloitte USI 2 months ago, and since then till last Friday it was showing " interview in progress" on their job portal, HR said earlier that we are interviewing other candidates. I got an offer from Amazon last week and asked Deloitte recruiter to speed up the process, i didn't get any reply on my email but now it's showing " review in progress" on the job portal. What does it mean? Shall I wait for Deloitte offer or take Amazon's offer.

Hello, I worked 1 year as a 'Senior Data Engineer' at 110k base. I then was offered and accepted a role as 'Service Manager' at 155k base where I worked another year. Just recently accepted a 'Data Engineer' job at 155k base but with a larger company (in theory with potential to grow).

I am a Google Certified Professional Data Engineer.

Should I be earning more?

Hi,
I had call with the HR for he position based out of Mumbai everything in interview and they are ready to share the offer. however, I quoted for 10 lakhs and they said for fixed pay of 8.75.
Although, i checked on Google as well average pay they are giving is 9.7 lakh
So should I accept the offer as per their negotiation or shall positively tell them why 10 lakh is justified?

Anybody know salary range for VP Operations for GS in SLC?

Hi All! Looking for some advice. I am a manager a country club but I do everything. I’m in charge of outside events and member events, in charge of the front of house staff, scheduling, ordering and membership sales for the club. I feel I am very underpaid at $45k. I do get commission but it’s very low ($10k give or take for the year). I work 6/7 days a week sometimes 10+ hrs/day. I’ve been researching salaries to be able to negotiate higher pay. I want to ask for $60k-is this reasonable?

How do I bring this up as the supervisor mentioned that we shouldn’t be talking about our raises.

My husband just received a job offer on an opportunity he is really excited about. It would be great for his career and they are giving the 15% jump in base he asked for, however they won’t share what the target bonus amount would be. It’s an executive director position, so I would assume it’s a decent target bonus, but without that in writing it could honestly be a gift basket at the end of the year. Is it a red flag for them to not share this? His total comp could be less at this new job…
