I hate to say this but based on what I'm seeing remote work is so unbelievably dead (at least for agencies). It's bad out here. Real bad.

The thing is, in advertising we are often expected to work late, work weekends and forego plans at the drop of a hat. And we don’t make on-call doctor money. WFH lets us be there for those crazy 80-hour weeks during pitches and still see our kids, walk our dogs, do some laundry and retain some semblance of our sanity. If this were a 9 to 5 job, the case for RTO would make more sense. But it can be a grueling industry with raises only when we switch agencies. So for god sake, why can’t they at least give us WFH?!

like

Yes, this. "Be on call in case we have the opportunity to get this out tonight" is a heck of a lot more reasonable from home than at an office.

I don’t understand why. Or rather keep it to once a day in the office. People have childcare needs etc and work from home really alleviated a lot of peoples’ stress. I don’t think WFH is why agencies are failing, they’re failing from poor leadership, a bad economy, and clients unwilling to spend more

like

No one wanting to be in the office definitely isn't helping lol

I just got hired into a remote role at a remote-friendly agency but we're also independent. The major holding companies have waged that war far harder than the indies.

likehelpful

Same here. My new agency is totally remote with the choice to come into the office anytime, and a once-a-month in-person team day.

I’m not gonna lie. Working on post production side of a project rn and it sucks. I feel like it’s so much more efficient to be in a room with an editor or colorist or sfx folks rather than being at home dropping notes into frame.io or live-streaming a work session.

But to each their own.

God forbid you have to leave your house to get paid.

Hahahaha

I LOVED…LOVED…WFH.
But i’ve accepted that it’s over.
I feel bad for those who can’t let go.
The sooner you stop fighting it, the sooner you’ll figure out a way to make it work for you (however painful that may feel).

likehelpfulsmart

You need to accept that it’s over, and also that there’s every data point to suggest that any corporate performance hit or layoff should begin with people who signed long term leases.

The data is hard for execs to see but everyone has to put on big boy pants: despite a rise in productivity and reduced costs from remote work, we’re loading balance sheets with bad real estate debt. The series of layoffs is on you. The reduced margins is on you.

like

I’m still remote. I’m not against going into an office, but it’s going to take a serious pay raise or title bump to get me out of my cozy pants and back under florescent lighting.

The vast majority of American workers already work in-person. Teachers, retail and food service workers, delivery drivers, firefighters, nurses. They don’t have a choice.

Why should we get special treatment? As knowledge workers, we already have higher privileges than many of those essential jobs. We get benefits and paid leave, don’t need to work our physical bodies into the ground. We work indoors with heat and air conditioning. We often have higher salaries, especially over the years as we grow in our careers.

As someone who worked in a restaurant before I entered the corporate world, I can tell you, it is a world of a difference to work a knowledge worker job. It’s hard to empathize with the pushback from being asked to leave our homes for work, when the majority of Americans already do so, and always have.

likesmart

Call me crazy, but I think every worker should be treated as well as possible if it doesn't hurt the business. Firefighters can't work from home. If we can, why shouldn't we? It's like saying, coal miners have to breathe in carcinogens, so why should the rest of us be so privileged as to think we deserve clean air?

like

Freelancers are still able to get remote gigs, even when the agency is RTO

like

And this is why we don't use ourselves as focus groups when we do work.

Do you mean people who are WFH are being forced to come into the office or that available opportunities are only In-office (or both?)
