I have a decade of general accounting experience - month end close, audit, tax. I wanted to ask if I get experience in payroll (compensation and benefits) accounting how interesting is it and is there any growth potential if I had to switch later to get experience with more aspects of accounting like external reporting
Or consolidation. My aim is to be an director/assistant controller one day.

Getting experience working in payroll couldn’t hurt, but probably not necessary to be an asst. controller or other. If you have experience auditing payroll and/or 401(k) plans then I would think you should be fine.

The compensation and benefits piece would be more interesting to learn about, but probably not an overly complicated process to learn. I have doubts if they will let you get access to confidential information like that if you aren’t already one of the decision makers at a company.
