But also to clarify - is the 18% you’re asking market value and in the range the pay? Are you already high for your current level? Make sure you have marketplace info backpocket.
Great advise! I did check on Glassdoor, and it looks like my request is absolutely in line with the range offered for the new title (and lower than the top end of the range shown on Glassdoor by $15k).
9% pay increase for a 62.5% increase in locations to support? I say they have lost their mind!
Were you offered this role as a true offer or did they restructure your role and presented it as an offer?
I would send an email stating you’ve noticed the system has been updated to reflect the promotion however you were under the assumption that the discussions were still in process as you have not formally accepted the role. Request a meeting to discuss further so you can get some clarification. And just decide ahead of time what your boundaries that you’re going to stick to are bc it seems like they’re already trying to push you around.
That was really alot of my logic for what salary range I wanted. If they hired 5 whole title levels below me to fill the role it would be at least $60k, I figured since it’s an internal hire to cut that number in half, and then because corporations are greedy an extra $10k off that. I felt like my expectations were very reasonable.
Take on 1/2 of the new states
Not really your problem … nobody would be willing to almost double their territory for 9% raise.
If you stick to your boundaries and say I’ll take half but not all for the 9% OR I want 18%raise, tell me what you can do…. they’ll figure it out.
So, they are not supposed to change your title or pay without you officially accepting the offer. I would push back and let them know they do not have your acceptance and that you will not be performing the duties and functions of this new role until the negotiation is fully complete.
And don’t be afraid to just stay in the role you’re currently in if they don’t accept your counter offer. I know many people who have turned down internal jobs that did not line up with their career goals or did not line up with their salary expectations. At the end of the day, you do not want to get ripped off. You have every right to hold your ground.
Yea it is really strange. And absolutely not normal. You should also apply elsewhere to see what else is out there
You need to continue to push back and stand up for yourself. Let them know you are excited about the new role and are up for the challenge; however, given all of the new responsibilities, you require a minimum of an 18% increase, or you officially reject the position. Make sure it’s all in writing. But, be ready and mentally prepared to start looking for a new position elsewhere if it comes down to it. Know your worth!
Then please call HR and just talk to them directly before making any decisions!
Another perspective to consider, from someone who works in operations, what is the volume supported in territory? Adding 5 states is 60% increase in “territory” but what is the impact on your time and work load. If they are smaller activity states you may only have 10% increase in operations and a fair increase at 9%. Conversely, if they are large volume states you could be doubling your workload (or more) for only 18%. I would present the impact of responsibilities from an operations perspective as well. Your business case should include “60% increase on territory, X% increase on operational volumes and market comp for salary”
I think the biggest heartburn I’m getting is behind him trying to force this on me even though I declined it.
