How do you all deal with the guilt of leaving a comany/ team? I have been working at Microsoft for 1 year now, and seriously considering moving. I find the code base to be very legacy and I mostly work on obscure bugs that I spend so much time on, mostly due to navigating this large code base and not having much docs to refer to. Hence I find the job slightly unsatisfying, and that I could learn more elsewhere. However, I love the wlb, the team and company culture. The guilt stops my applying.

Go home if you can! Coffee shop is often loud and out of your control. Staying at work may make you nervous just because you’re there, wondering who can hear you and what not. Good luck!!
I’ve sat in my car. They get it. Anyone who won’t hire you based on that isn’t worth working for.
I’ve taken calls in the car as well. Background noise and air conditioning can be an issue, but it’s more comfortable than being in the office. If you don’t have a car, go home for half the day.
Having interviewed people over zoom, I’d say go home. I know others in my group viewed the sitting in the car as unprofessional
We recently had someone interview from a conference room at their office. The reaction wasn’t that it was unprofessional, but I think the comment was - are they that bold? or just stupid? Personally, it didn’t consciously impact my ratings, but I was wondering whether the few people who walked by in the background could hear her explain why she’d decided to look for new opportunities. I get that people have to do what they can, but ideally, where you’re taking the interview isn’t what you want to be memorable.
Thank you everyone for your responses! I think I’m just going to go home for the interview and say I have an appointment. Luckily I don’t live very far away.
I’ve done car, I’ve gone home for “lunch” when the interview was mid day, I’ve left the office for “lunch” and walked to a library as well. Never had anyone comment on my background of where I’m sitting
Definitely don't do this in the office. Try to go home if you can. I try to schedule interviews on my wfh days or early morning/ late afternoon on the days I'm in the office so I can either come or leave early and not have to worry about going back to the office (I live an hour from work so it's hard so can't go home for lunch to do the interview). Haven't tried the car but feel like it works look unprofessional and at a coffee shop, you'll have too much background noise.
I did the interview first thing in the morning from home and said I had an “appointment” and would be in late to the office.
Doctors appointments can be any time of day lol
Use a virtual background on Zoom. And go home.
Try looking up if there are any coworking places nearby where you can book a private room. Some have them by the hour or half hour.
Make sure to use a virtual background. My judge finds the car or bed in the background very unprofessional.
GC, I agree with you lol
If you have AirPods, I think it’s okay to do it at a coffee shop. I did mine at Barnes and noble, in the Starbucks section where it’s a bit quieter than other Starbucks, and it was fine. I ended up getting the job.
Work and use a conference room
Best to do it at home on your own computer. I’ve heard people complain about those sitting in cars during interviews
A7 I’ve been in the panel interviewer side on for these. It’s when it’s in comparison to someone who took the time to be home rather than what comes across as not being as dedicated/committed. Not saying it’s accurate but people need to keep in mind that you’re still in competition with others for the role.
car
Some libraries have study rooms or out of the way carrels that are quiet and private. Usually good Wi-Fi as well.
Is it too late to say you have a "doctor's appointment" and go home to do the interview? Are you in a rather large building that has a quiet lobby away from your floor/office? Find somewhere quiet and put on your virtual background. If you have to sit in your car, put on the virtual background and maybe sit in the backseat so the AC isn't blasting directly in the mic.
