I have an offer to be a director of a finance function for a private company. Is it ok to ask to look at their financials prior to accepting the offer? It’s a PE backed company and I just to make sure they’re trending in the right direction financially before leaving my stable job to this.

You can ask. They might say it’s confidential tho, since you’re not working with them yet.

Yes, it's wise if you are leaving a good thing you because yo udon't want to walk into a sh*t show and lose your mind AND your income.

I've asked multiple times, they will hem and haw because many are not profitable, nor cash flow positive; I had to sign an nda once or twice to see them. Others were like, "sure, take a look-- no problem!"

You could simply ask for certain kpi's instead.
Top line sales , 3 year historical sales trend, expected sales growth % next 3 years, GM/GP%, typical daily operating cash balance, # of employees, weekly gross payroll...stuff like that. # of trucks/fleet, notes payable $, %direct/indirect employees; bank lines, available line of credit;
sales tax /use tax amounts $ paid per month, stuff like that to verify they are telling you the truth.
they should offer that info w/o a problem.

So many great opps at a small /medium sized private company.

typo: "companies..."
