I have been at my firm for about a year and a half and am on track to meet the minimum billable requirement (1980). Will it look bad if I just meet the minimum? Should I be pushing myself to do more?

No, you’ll be fine.

like

Yes, it will look bad. Even worse, you will miss your hours if something happens in Oct.-Dec. (matters close prematurely, get sick, you enjoy the holidays).

funny

LOL. This is ridiculous. You will absolutely *not* look bad. I can see the comp committee discussion now: “Ok team, we asked Alex to bill 1980 and [checks notes] oh wow, Alex billed 1980… wait what?! 1980?! WTF?! Why didn’t they bill more than 1980?! Didn’t we ask them to bill 1980?! And they had the gall to bill 1980?!”

likefunny

1980 is fine. You don’t want to burn out. I wouldn’t recommend billing more than that unless there is an obvious rule at your firm that you should exceed the expectation or there is a bonus structure that will compensate you for your additional hours. You should also keep in mind that 1980 is higher than the standard hours requirement.

like

What is the standard requirement? There’s a bonus structure and I would definitely be compensated for doing more but I’m not really interested in killing myself to go over what’s expected of me unless it will look badly if I don’t.

I hit my exact required hours two years in a row. What did the partners do? They patted me on the back, gave me my bonus, and increased my hours. You’ll be fine.

Transactional junior associate in biglaw. Working for a dedicated practice group rather than in an associate pool. For the past few months, I’ve been loaned to another practice group for a good chunk of time. While the people are decent and the hours aren’t terrible, I detest the work and don’t see a future in this new practice. My main partner says it should end in the next month, but I don’t expect that to happen. Is it a terrible idea to ask to be taken off?

I recently had a specialist partner send me a fairly nasty email after I (a transactional first year) was told to ask them to review something ASAP that had clearly been on my partner’s radar for over a week. Why am I taking the (honestly justified) blame for this? Surely it should be obvious that I’m just the messenger here.

Hi new here. Idk what my value is and if I’m getting paid an amount that reflects my hard work. I am a paralegal for a small law firm (family and immigration) w only 1 attorney. I have about 20 files or more in my rotation at a time. I work on various types of cases at once. Some are simple, others are extensive. I feel like it’s very unstructured and one of the managers micromanages. It’s like every man for himself. Take home pay is $50k. I am working on my bachelors deg. Do I get paid enough?
