Yes. You follow a professional code of ethics. The moment a job is even suggested by a client, you are no longer independent.
You were supposed to inform your partner or whoever is your firm’s quality control director ahead of time you were soliciting or had been solicited a job interview with a current client. Better inform them now.
Your interpretation of independence doesn’t justify that there appears to be an independence issue. The rule is independent in fact and APPEARANCE
I would tell your partner. I had a job offer which I did not accept from the client and I informed my manager. The partner ended up finding out while making the rounds at the client.
Not sure about how it works with independence bc I worked on the client (non-public) a few days after the partner and I spoke and I’m still on that engagement a few years later.
This kind of thing only really affects SEC independence
I personally don’t think independence is affected here in any fashion
PWC2 & PWC3 the reason it's an issue is because while applying, you're hoping to get the job, therefore if on the audit at the time you could cheat the audit in their favor to gain brownie points and get the job. Similarly if you just applied but didn't get an offer and are now on the audit, you could be overtly biased against them and cheat the audit against them OR cheat it in their favor in hopes of getting them to reconsider or let you re-interview. The interest in the company enough to apply implies you really like the company and brings into question if you're willing to be "professionally skeptical" enough to not brush off "small" variances because you like them.
Thank you all for the replies. Any suggestions on how I should bring up the topic with the partner? And just to clarify I have not started the engagement for this client yet in 2019.
Just explain what happened. You were approached first by the client with an invitation to interview and you proceeded to interview. You wanted to be transparent and adhere to the independence policy so you are reporting this. Being a straight shooter is the best policy in this profession. Accounting is a small world and many people go to work for former clients. It shouldn't come to anyone's surprise.
