Just go work directly for clients as full time employee.
I think the animosity is for below reasons:
- As a big consulting company there is often a them vs us mentality that clients take on, whether valid or not. Bringing in consultants is also typically an exec level decision vs an independent team on the client making that decision.
- as an independent contractor there was likely more vetting to onboard you. You are viewed as more part of the team. And the decision to bring in a contractor may have been made with more input from the team they are joining vs just being an exec level decision.
Accenture 1 got it in one -
Companies employ consulting firms to grind them hard and get an outcome.
They employ independent contractors to help them achieve an outcome (maybe that is managing the consulting firm)
I was let go from a large firm because I kept pushing them to acknowledge that they were part of an illegal contract. No details, but I was actually near a breakdown and didn't realize it.
After some time healing, I have never gone back. I am not great at pushing myself forward, but the release of working for myself has been mind-blowing! If you can afford to support you and yours for at least a year (used to say six months, but...), push the business. Stay in touch with your old clients, not only for repeat work, but so that they can introduce you to your next client!
