I live 20 minutes from my office and generally refuse to go there. That was true for me before the pandemic as my role was primarily remote. I think a lot of people just prefer WFH and are loathe to stop. Nor do I think it needs to stop.
This is blown out of proportion in my opinion. Only ~5% people I know moved, and even those people just moved to the suburbs..
I think your frame of “temporary situation” may not be set in stone across the board. A lot of employees have come to value work life balance available to partial or full remote work and don’t intend to give those up. There’s big trends of workers valuing remote opportunities over pay jumps when considering new jobs. We’re in a transitory state on what workers expect and what employers will provide.
That is a great point on “temporary situation “. For some it can be permanent because they are close to retirement. For some who are far from retirement, time will tell if market will keep offering remote opportunities.
I was thinking what happens when number of remote opportunities dry up and there are more candidates looking for them. Its a good discussion in any case.

It is a super interesting phenomenon. I’ve heard about people moving states away when their job remained the same, I guess the logic was that their view of what was important changed due to the pandemic and they no longer cared about prioritizing their work’s demands over their personal lives. It seems like it would be impossible to have actually believed there would never be an attempt to return to the office
That is an interesting and actually very realistic take. I guess some people were at a point in life or career that they could make that decision. I have a long career ahead of me so I couldn’t get in that mindset but thats a good response/point of view
