Owe ~$4,500 in taxes for 2020. Anything I can do to reduce this amount? Going to contribute some extra money to 401k to get me to 19,500 for the year. Anything else?

Losses can only offset winnings.

Isn’t it too late to make a 401k contribution for 2020? Possibly make an IRA?

like

Google says it’s not too late. I have a Roth IRA that I max out - would contributing to an IRA as well reduce taxable income?

Charitable contributions

Did you use a tax pro? Last few years I started my taxes in apps like turbo tax only to find a tax pro saved me $$$. I’m going straight to a pro next year.

Itemize the fuck out of deductions:
1) all interest/dividends from INT/DIV
2) Real estate/property tax - know your annual
3) Clothing donations - Max it @ $5K as you dictate the value
4) office space - Max it at 300 sq ft for $1500
5) tools of your trade for a year - office expenses (anything obsolete in tech in a year)
6) donations to charities
7) HSA
8) IRA
9) student loan interest
It can go on depending on who you are and what you have, but those are probably norm for your income level. In the end, it’s a balancing act between two numbers.

I’ve used H&R with tax pro and audit protection for 7 years running. Costs me like $250 (depending all the states), but it’s always worth it.

Junior Associates - How much student loan debt are you and your peers in these days? A few young partners and counsel at my firm were discussing the student loan moratorium and most of us were convinced we could have paid the majority of our loans off with the bonuses associates got these last two years. But we are all old and when we graduated 150k to 200k was about the max student loan debt people graduated with. So educate me. What is the average student loan debt these days?

So i have been fortunate that i have managed to go through my career without the need for a degree. I was lucky enough to have been hired by one of the worlds top consulting firms, worked with a whole lot of big clients and travelled a lot. It's gotten to the point where I am not even asked about the lack of a degree on my resume. Personally though, it bothers me. I have a whole bunch of certifications in my industry…but just no formal degree. (cont'd)

Finally found THE one, after over a year of searching and trying out at least 5 different ones!

A nice comfortable office chair.

https://ergochair.co/collections/chairs/products/ergonomics-mesh-chair-w-adjustable-headrest-and-armrest?variant=32511617597491

My criteria: mesh seat and back, arms, headrest

I tried cheap ones from Amazon. Expensive, second hand gaming chairs. Tried HM Aeron (second hand) and while I didn't like the bulk and the general design, I was sold on the mesh seating. I wanted to get the ErgoChair 2 from autonomous, but it doesn't have mesh seat.

AMA.
