It’s an opportunity, I wouldn’t whine about it. You’ve completed your first year but if you have a strong second year maybe you’ll be an early promote
They feel you’re capable and have a cheaper charge rate.
Because the people above you are quitting
So you can learn and practice reviewing so you’ll be a good senior. They don’t except you to catch everything someone with more experience would. Take the opportunity and try your best. You’re reviewing one return. Chill.
Are you reviewing often?
This happened to me when I was barely a first yr, my senior prepped it for me to review. It's a learning experience to see a completed return side by side with her work papers. Gives us the possibility to learn something new with inputs I could've missed, wasn't aware about and question if it makes sense. Then again, our firm starts training us for our promotion rolls to see if we're ready/able to handle it once promoted.
Are you not looking to be promoted at the end of this year ? (Year 2)
And is it fair that I'm being paid significantly less than them to do the same job?
You are right. All your suspicions are correct. They are taking advantage of you. Well because you are in no position to challenge them. You can’t leave. Maybe next time you will think twice about being an overachiever. Only thing you can do now is excel or they will know you are doing poorly intentionally.
Take the opportunity. When you become invaluable to your superiors, that’s when you build your brand and can start getting real opportunities. Don’t worry it’s common for a Staff 2 to be asked to senior some work
Assume your not in B4 - due to some shuffling of staff, I have an A1 who’s been here 4 weeks reviewing WPs and returns from India. She’s not the first with only a few months experience to do that for me - just have to explain things and be available for questions and know things will take longer than me doing it but such is delegating. I was running an intern and reviewing 2 different returns before I finished my 1st year.
