I just had (in my opinion) a great interview with a firm I'm really excited about. At the end of the interview, the partner told me that there are 2-3 spots for a post-clerk position, and two spots have been filed by former attorneys at the firm who are now clerking. He said he would get back to me about availability as soon as possible. Has anyone else come across this? Should I be worried that means there is no spot? If so, why bring host clerk mixers and bring me in person to interview?

Will your judge make a phone call for you?

I only add that sometimes, if a decision has been made that there is a spot for someone right of a clerkship, it is possible that someone involved in the decision would like to be contacted by the judge, even if indirectly.

Was it a screener interview or callback? If the former, it seems that if they have room then they’ll bring you in for more interviews. If it was during the callback I’d take it as a bad sign. Regardless, it is strange he said how much availability the firm has; I wouldn’t look into it, nothing you can do.

It was a callback. They had me skip the screener. Allegedly, there is confirmed one spot open, so it sounds like they may just be interviewing other clerks now

Im looking to transition myself back to IT/Tech, but am feeling apprehensive in getting the attention of recruiters with the industry switch. Still WFH? What are other chambers doing for task management? Our chambers has been keeping up with assignments, incoming emails needing judge’s eyes, and written orders, all through Microsoft Planner. We share PDFs through Sharepoint folders. Although we still email draft orders back and forth, the system seems to work well enough. We still aren’t operating at our previous capacity because it takes 10x the number of steps to get a motion heard or an order entered—90% of our workload.

Is it the smart move to take a pay cut and clerk for a judge?

Little context: I was an ED student, full time paralegal/clerk throughout my law school experience, and a single mother. I did not take advantage of the law school extracurriculars and missed out on clerk application deadlines my final year (2020). Would it benefit me to take a pay cut as a transactional clerk by about $20k to work as a clerk for a year then re-enter firm life? I’m transactional and enjoy that line of work.

Need advice on a specific question!
Interviewed with Chicago court 2 weeks ago; they decide mid-August. Interviewed with DC judge last week; hear from him by this Friday. Chicago said if I need an answer before August, they'd try to make a decision about me sooner.
Should I ask Chicago for an answer? Or should I wait until there's an offer from DC judge? Maybe seems better to withdraw before an offer is made rather than ask for time to think about it/turn down DC? What's proper etiquette?

I’ve been at my clerkship for 5 years (4 with a different judge) and one with my current judge, and I heard horrible things about him before starting, but I assumed they were exaggerated. Turns out they’re all true, and I’ve had to start therapy to deal with him and the incredibly toxic environment. I’m trying to get out ASAP b/c he also has a history of firing clerks without cause or notice, but I think I’ll only be able to give two weeks notice if i get the job I’m interviewing for. Thoughts?
