I actually think it's great when athletes speak or act in ads! Sure, they might not be professional actors, but their authenticity and personal connection to the product often shine through. It can make the ad feel more genuine, like they really believe in what they're promoting, which resonates with viewers.
There are plenty of athletes who are very good at commercials.
I'm so glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. Most of the time, those athletes don’t make that commercial any more or less effective, but they give the brand some extra views or attention from fans and super fans. Still, I'm not influenced at all. Can we just develop commercial actors instead like we used to?
Derrick White for Sam Adams was great. But they had the right director and the right script. And five-word lines, max. I’ve seen Derrick White in a bank ad and it was terrible. It’s possible to get a good performance out of just about any non-actor, but you need to really break it down into small chunks. And then work very very closely with them. Get lots of takes spend a lot of time in the editing suite.
There have been athletes who are good in commercials, but it depends a lot on the material and how they're directed. I had a colleague who had worked with athletes and said they could be good to work with just because they're wired to be coached. So if you know what you're doing you can get a decent read out of them. He said at times it was easier to work with athletes than actors or models.
