I shared with head hunters. It's useful for them to understand the market and builds good will. If it's not a match don't need to waste either of our time
Depends.
If you’re making above market average for similar roles in similar Industries, it makes sense to disclose either current comp or expected comp, if you’re willing to walk away if it’s not met. You’ll save time and energy on.both sides.
If you’re willing to take a pay cut, it doesn’t make sense to disclose.

Usually you are asked this early on. Never disclose first. The question after you know is do you need /want this job even if it pays less, or are you in a position to pass if they don't exceed your current compensation. In general, jobs have certain paybands. Just because someone else is paying you more doesn't mean the job for which you are interviewing has that value for them.

It all depends on your willingness to walk away. OP Sounds like someone who has been told a number lower than they are currently making.
The approach is really based on how you are being paid versus the market, how much you need/want the job. There is also a difference in how much I want ( never give your bottom number) and how much I am currently making. Especially when a base is over very different that the value of the whole package
If you have high comp and want to make sure you don’t waste time with people that won’t meet it. I guess you could indicate what you would move for, but I could also see indicating what you make and saying you want move w/o 20% more or something like that.
This is how I handled transferring firms as a director.
My current base is X my Bonus was Y I would need a 30% bump to leave

I nearly always lead with my base and say that I'm looking to stay near the same base at a minimum. Our bonuses are terrible but they don't know that. I typically expect to take a pay cut since I'm trying to move to industry and not a lot of roles are paying $290K for 10 YOE.

I always get asked up-front, I don’t understand how this doesn’t come up early for folks? How do you know an opportunity is in the right ballpark if you don’t discuss pay.
