Question is - would you rather move to a city in the middle of the country where you don’t know anyone for a few $$ or have a better quality of life, a built in network and social life in Dallas? I’d stay in Dallas, work a bit, figure out what you like / don’t like and leverage your network if you want to move.
That’s what I am leaning towards right now because I have no idea what Indy is like. I am however extremely reluctant to accept a $65k offer when I turned a $62k offer down after undergrad to go to grad school
I would take the Dallas at 65 but keep looking. No moving expenses, no new city, no apartment deposits etc. use the time to get some additional experience, tighten your resume and stay open to a better paying opportunity. The salary difference will be eaten up with all your relocation costs. So you won’t benefit from the 73 in Indy
That is a really good point. Relocation would cost a pretty penny. Thanks for the advice!
I would leverage the 73k to ask more from the Dallas. You have nothing to lose. Worst case they say no and you still get 63k.
Not sure about your industry, but for many consulting firms, masters degree does not lead to higher salary as compared to bachelors. MBA and PhD do.
The firm I worked for offered 5k more for a masters
73k in Indy goes wayyyy further than 65k (or even 73k) in Dallas FYI.
Definitely am curious about living in Chicago for a few years though…
Think about promotion potential @ both firms.
Also, what you make more of in IN may very well be taken away by taxes you wouldn't have to pay in TX given no state income tax. I'd consider them about even salary wise, maybe an extra pay check per year. Do the math with an online calculator to be sure.
Also, in IN, you'd have winter.
I'd stay in Dallas and focus on jumping in a year.
Have you bet the leaders of the teams you'd be working on? Which team do you like better?
That is such a good point I did not even consider income tax. I haven’t asked Indy for a relocation bonus yet because at this point, I don’t know if I can see myself moving there.
It's a minimal risk and worth asking. I've bumped up master's applicants when they ask. They're unlikely to withdraw the offer but I wouldn't fight on it. Just thank them for the offer ask politely if there is any room to negotiate given your degree. If they withdraw for that - you dodged a bullet
Thank you for the advice!! I’ve had an offer rescinded before so I’m a little traumatized lol
Job market has shifted tremendously. Can’t compare to a few years back where talent was the bottleneck. Why 80k? Most companies do not negotiate wages given salary bands. They can do sign ons or moving allowance. I would not focus on base salary it likely will not go through and show a lack of knowledge for their recruiting process
That is a great question. To be honest, I’ve grow up very privileged and if I want to maintain my lifestyle and savings habits I think I would be comfortable doing so with 80k based on my math. I will say, I appreciate your perspective because to be honest I probably do have a lack of knowledge for the recruiting process.
Let us know which company are the offers from so that it might help everyone who's in the job search.
Enforce Consulting in Dallas and Spot Inc in Indianapolis!
Both seem low for consulting. You might want to keep looking if your grades were decent
They aren’t really consulting. One is software implementation “consulting” and the other is a BI Analyst reporting role. Definitely not consulting salaries lol.
Alternatively, am I completely out of line wanting 80k starting in Data Analytics/Data Consulting?
I appreciate your perspective. I have definitely been grappling with some imposter syndrome from this job market…
May I ask the company in Dallas? I went to SMU also...and started at a consulting firm in the $60k range...did not enjoy it
The company in Dallas is not straight consulting, but they do software implementation if that helps. I don’t feel super comfortable disclosing the names right now.
