Why did you become a Sales Engineer?

I’ll start: Happenstance.

I used to work as a CSM. I loved speaking to clients about the features and value of technology solutions, but I was getting tired of trying to operationalize them for success. Decided to move into sales so I didn’t have to do deal with client support anymore.

10 years of customer success and implementation... as an SE I .enjoy painting the vision but not executing it.

I had previously used the software at my former company and randomly got an InMail from a recruiter about the role. I had some friends working in sales that loved it, and when I heard how much they were bringing in it was kind of a no brainer. I hated my former job, which helps me sympathize with the customers I am now talking to. I’ve been in the role 2 years now, I love what I do, I just got promoted to senior, and will be on a beach this spring for President’s Club.

I think the big seller for me was that you can make a really good career out of being an SE, but I’ve seen people leave to go into product, sales, services, and marketing. The skills you learn are transferable to really any part of the org, so it’s easy to move up or laterally at any point in time.

As a SWE I was bored at home flicking through Angel List, and I saw an opportunity to be the first SE for a fast-growing startup and I thought "hey, why not try something else?" Turned out to be the best decision of my life. Got out of the engineering grind, gained autonomy and work/life balance. Once into the enterprise space, I also got paid more than SWEs at the same level. Life is good!

I knew I was going to end up in sales but didn’t want to handle the quota aspect. One day a sales engineer showed up at a class at university and talked about her job. Right then I knew that’s what I wanted to do

Was the best paying offer out of college. Im 24, 3 YOE and already a Senior Sales Engineer, I’d say I got lucky it was such a great fit.

Thanks!

I became a sales Engineer because i enjoy solving problems and making connection with people. I still enjoy doing this.

Started in ticket support. Then the sales reps needed someone to join a client call to help answer technical questions. I became comfortable with clients and moved into a SC dept

I’m a terrible liar and I probably can’t BS my way out of a demo. However, I love the product I sell. I just need to be my nerdy self and try to make sure what I sell matches with my customer’s objectives. I enjoy that a lot.

I'm still very fresh in this position, but my reasoning was mostly comp fueled. Went from post-sales consulting doing implementations of all things IT to SE for a SaaS where my work stops at the sale, doubled my earnings. 0 YoE in Sales, 10 YoE IT consulting (client facing). Hoping it'll be a unicorn role (less work, more money).

I was sick and burned out to work my b*&$ off, connecting with customers, going extra miles to establish relationships, up sell our various tools (every company I went) and when came to promotions or raises we never had "enough budget".

So you moved to become an advocate for technology? (Pluralsight LLC1) This is a very interesting career path for me: Working with technology while showing it to the world and helping people without quotas… seems like it checks all the boxes.

I was working in a toxic management consulting environment and hated it. A friend at SAP said I'd be a great fit for a job opening and forwarded my resume along, and here I am. Overall, it's similar to a consulting job except it's internal and in a matrixed organization. I enjoy it for the most part.

Also happenstance 😂 first job out of school just so happened to be in an SE role

I got out of a full-time role to start my own business and so I in turn became the SE

Looking for advice... 5 months ago I went from Higher Education (HE) Law Firm. I was so excited to move on and was offered about $16K more in my salary.

Today I find myself not excited about my current job and since the firm is much smaller than my last job in HE I feel like there is less growth opportunities. Every day I want to message my old manager about coming back but my wife doesn't think I should primarily because of the stress I went through. Tbh I miss the stress and workload (cont.)

What does it take to switch into a Sale Engineer role? I started my career in tech consulting and then switched to solutions engineering, but not at all on the Sales side of things. I remember working sales when I was in highschool and I loved the rewarding feeling of landing a customer. I'd love to someday switch back into it, since I find myself loving tech but not really the best at it.

I’m an SE who works 2 AE’s, and from looking at the market am on the bottom end of the pay scale. The company I work for has many different products/services (80+), so they wanted SEs to take on a local “SME” role in a specific area, to support other members of the team.

This role has ramped up quite a bit recently, and people have been coming to me for help with their deals (overviews, demos, POCs) which is increasing my workload.

How would you approach asking for more money here? Thanks!

I recently had an interview with a very promising pre-IPO company in the AI/ML space for a SE leadership position. The interview feedback was better than I expected, but with a twist. They have already given the offer to someone else, but they still want to bring me on board and they asked me what I would like to do. I am in the process of gathering more info, but it is tempting to ask about pivoting into product management. What would you do in this situation?

I am an individual contributor with ~8 years of experience and a strong track record. I enjoy my work, but am getting a little burnt out being directly customer facing. I also want a bigger seat at the table. I am not the most natural people manager, but want to push myself and take on a new challenge.
What can I do to position myself for this?
