So it was Accenture ? There is no big 5
Also wow, what a revelation.
No. I am seeing budgets removed from what would have been a consulting exercise to make room for an AI initiative. This results in the total expenditure by our clients to increase, just not be directed to the consultancy firms.
We then also see implementation firms delivering AI frameworks and POCs with hyperscaler funding, which is simultaneously a race to the bottom from the client and a funding pull from the hyperscalers who are now feeling the pressure.
Then we get to actual consulting firms. People have skilled up in productivity AI tools and can produce more quicker. Rather than see a consulting direct contraction, it means we do more with less people. Since we go to my first point of doing more with less, we now need to sell more with fewer people doing the work to keep costs competitive and that means you need more people selling in work for smaller groups. If you can't close enough to keep everyone busy... layoffs.
Long story short, I guess you could say AI is taking our jobs, but just not in the AI is doing it - more a funding piece.
Hyperscalers are increasing the barrier to funding. If you are supporting department #34 to the agentic POC conversation, it is significantly more challenging to get funding and that de-scopes the POCs because they have to be done on less total budget. Then you add the additional new component of may of these AI platforms starting to step into the consulting space - i.e. they are going to the mattresses with us. So yes, hyperscalers have money, but the cracks in the wall are very real.

Well you definitely don’t need an army of System Integrators anymore if that is qualifying as “consulting”. But all of these companies are going to successfully implement AI on their own? I don’t think so.
Agreed clients can’t do this on their own though they are all having conversations with these LLM’s but are nickel and diming their people’s use of tokens on said platforms.
yes, it’s an existential crisis for mgmt consulting without any data moat

Big 5 is a remnant of the Enron days, in the way back Time Machine. We only speak of DMBBA now.

It was confusing because big 5 in the AI context can refer to the big 5 tech firms operating as hyper scalers.
Their is no Big 5
