I recently received a job offer as a Wealth Management Advisor after completing my bachelor’s degree. I’m excited about the opportunity, but I’m wondering if this is a good starting point for someone interested in pursuing a career in finance. Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated.

Finance is very broad. I have a friend in wealth management whom I kind of find annoying cause it seems like we used to be friends but now all they want to do is sell me a service. I don’t really see a career trajectory if you decide you hate sales which is essentially what this role is. Not to dog on you but tbh, consider doing more while you’re young like getting an mba or just go learn to code. It will set you up for a better future than this imo. This is also from personal experience as now the best career I can have is in corp. Finance which is pretty much a glorified accountant, not as sexy as a true finance role nor do we make near the same amounts.

All is well man, like you said finance is very broad. Since WM is easier to get into there’s a lot of bad apples out there anyway. Was just hoping to help the OP as it can be a really good field if you find the right employer.

I have a business idea in the VR/AR space utilizing AI. However, I lack skill sets to evaluate viability or to create an MVP. Neither do I have a network to tap into.

Does this approach make sense or do you recommend other approaches? If it makes sense, do you have any recommendations for classes or communities?

Look forward to hearing your experiences and wisdom!

I’ve been working for a company for 25yrs, looking for advancement. I’m considered an SME, managing people, Vendors and working on large system conversions. Have provided long term goals. When requesting feedback I’m told I’m on the right path, no suggestions on what to improve. I asked about timelines for advancement and not being given anything concrete. Recently interviewed with another company as a Vendor Mgmt partner. Individual contributor, high visible position with potential. Thoughts?

I’m currently a 2nd year associate in commercial finance. I’ve realized I don’t enjoy a a strictly transactional practice. I enjoyed litigation matters as a summer (particularly the adversarial nature). Also, love talking and advising clients. I don’t want the litigation lifestyle and appreciate the in-house opportunities of transactional. Assuming that I could switch (or lateral), I’m thinking I may enjoy employment (and the ability to defend and train/advise). I appreciate any insight.

Wrong, I spend weeks following up with other teams, often times they forgot what we discussed, so I spent 50% if the time reminding them of the topics and next steps. I spend most of my time writing memos no one will read.
