I remember my very first salary negotiation, I went in thinking I was going to get paid so much more then what they were currently offering. It was a promotion. I was unprepared. I didn’t research. When I tried to counteroffer, they asked if I had another job lined up and looked at me like I was ridiculous. I’ve learned a lot since then. Especially from this group that preparation and data matter more than effort alone.

What’s one thing you wish you knew before your first negotiation?

I personally would like to know the Net Service Revenue of the company..The Net Profit of the company..The percentage that each individual contributed to make those numbers and what percentage I brought in..Directly by Me individually and also indirectly by my influence and or advice " help" towards the other participants that make up those numbers corporately...There is a time and place for everything under the sun, Time to negotiate and time to pass..A person must be consistent to be an asset to a company, A person must all be loyal those characteristics are important for negotiation...It's not always about the present state of a person's value if they have a goal..You can win a game with 2 seconds left on the clock after being behind from the start...Play the tape all the way to the end is all Im saying, making money is easy but having value with the group that you do it with is priceless..A man without purpose is lost..If it is always selfish and about you money means nothing...In the end you loose..Vanity is useless...A real boss is one that surrounds himself with people that are good at what they do..He cares about the people not just his bottom Line. although that is important..If they have a problem get in the solution with them have compassion,That's the people that make a person's business successful and they are loyal because you taught them what loyalty is...Success is not based on profit margins and bottom line those are all just benefits for loving and caring for the ones that are loyal to your purpose and you...Anyway, Trust God and love people in that order...Love God ,Your Family,Your country.
GOD BLESS AMERICA

Thank you for a challenging question
that made me think about who I am.

My first negotiation felt the same. I walked in blind and thought “promotion” automatically meant a big bump. Instead, they lowballed me, and I had no data to push back with. I wish I knew then that research is half the battle.

I wish I had known that negotiation was not unexpected and didn’t make me greedy or anything. That was a mental block that was hard to get over for me

I am a traditional reservist so I never really used military benefits before, but could use advice here.

I am currently renting and my lease is not up until October 2021, however I found a good deal on a home and scheduled to close in June 2021.

My landlord will not work with me to end the lease early, so it looks like I will have to double up on rent and mortgage through the summer.

If I went on active duty orders, can I use those orders to break my lease early without penalty?

How do you deal with an HR that ghosts you after 3 interviews that went really well? I landed an offer at Deloitte as a sr. consultant, and then negotiated for a managerial role. I was told all interviewers were really happy with me so she would be glad to arrange a reevaluation for the new role(I was interviewed by 2 Sr. Managers & an MD for Sr. Consultant role and will have to take another round with a partner for the managerial position). I tried following up thrice after, no response.

I've done so well in this new role within the company that they are hiring another person to assist with what I do. I've voiced to my boss that I'd like to manage this department and they indicated that this is the thought for the future. Now they are asking me to train this person while I have my plate full. Is it wrong for me to expect either a promotion or to be paid to train this person?

Additional Posts in Salary Negotiations

I’m interviewing with a startup and the range has a 40k difference from the lowest to highest point. It’s also pre-seed and comes with equity, and health, 401k benefits. It’s a director of sales role so I would eventually be recruiting and managing a team along with building the processes and strategy. What would you consider a fair compensation package? If they offer me something on the lower end of the range, is it still appropriate to counter with an offer that is over their stated range?

My husband just received a job offer on an opportunity he is really excited about. It would be great for his career and they are giving the 15% jump in base he asked for, however they won’t share what the target bonus amount would be. It’s an executive director position, so I would assume it’s a decent target bonus, but without that in writing it could honestly be a gift basket at the end of the year. Is it a red flag for them to not share this? His total comp could be less at this new job…
