I saw a TikTok recently that was talking about how in order to move up in leadership you have to lose your empathy and just focus on yourself getting ahead. I have seen this at work so many times and I feel like it’s a reason why I am just not interested in playing that game. Do others think this is true? Is this the only way to get ahead?

I agree with another commenter that mid-level management probably didn’t get there by dishonest means — they likely worked hard for it. That said, I know I probably won’t climb that high myself, because I’m not going to kiss anybody’s butt just to move up. I’m happy doing well by caring for patients the way I was trained and loving on people. I’d rather keep my empathy than lose it for a title.

I think this holds true at the leadership/executive levels. You've got to be a certain degree of ruthless to make it all the way up the corporate ladder. I don't think it's as accurate for lesser roles. Plenty of my colleagues in management are thoroughly decent people that got where they are through hard work and networking.

like

Yeah I see that too. Management and executive leadership seem to be pretty different in that respect.

That attitude goes back quite a way, long before TikTok. For some people it has certainly worked, they've gotten ahead in their careers, but they've probably done damage to their personal reputations. I don't believe that's the only way to get ahead, and I have to believe there are better ways to advance yourself than by becoming an awful person.

Seems to be fairly standard.

Yep, you have to swim with sharks!

Sadly, I have seen that too. Some people climb by losing touch. The real leaders, though, manage to rise and stay human. They are just harder to find.

Yes this is very true. Many people in the work field don't have any empathy, and those are the ones who are in higher ranks in the work force. If you have to be heartless to get ahead I rather be my own boss.

I don’t think it’s the only way to get ahead but I can certainly see why some people feel as if that is the only way. I think there is a way to empathetic and still be successful in leadership, it just takes a special type of person to be able to do that.

I was once at a dinner with a second year analyst, consultant, and partner, and the analyst said he planned on retiring by 30 and the partner and consultant laughed. Little did they know, the analyst owned his own home and rented all the rooms out so he payed no rent, never ate out, only grocery shopped, and very very rarely bought anything new. He saved most of his income, and was perfectly content with just his video games. That man was serious about not being stuck working forever.
