Not and MD, but have been doing community nursing for a decade. I find it imperative to ensure that the discussion is culturally appropriate. I can't tell you how many time I've discussed nutrition as it pertains to co-morbidities and the foods that patients actually consume is never discussed by their PCP/RD/Nutritionist.
I love myplate.gov. It's super user-friendly and I find that most of my patients are very receptive to it.
I don't do this in the office (because...slippery slope), but when friends ask, I have a few IG accounts that I REALLY love. They're more approachable and realistic, and the info is easily consumable for a people on the go or who feel too busy to "research" stuff. For example, I love referring parents to Kids Eat in Color.
For pts that express a desire to lose weight, I usually ask if they only eat when hungry and if they stop when full or when finished with a plate. I teach them about eating when hungry and stopping when not hungry. I let them know it is something to try a few days, or just half a day here and there. See if it helps them, or if they want something more intense which entails doctors and dietitians. It’s amazing how many people don’t realize they can stop eating before a plate is finished, and do something other than eat when watching TV or bored. It’s even more amazing how many of them are open to small simple changes that make them feel better overall.
