I understand the concern around job cuts, it’s something many of us face. One mindset that’s helped me is focusing on building financial stability beyond just employment.

Layoffs and market shifts will always happen, but when you build financial security, you’re protected either way.

At the end of the day, it’s about putting yourself and your family in a position where external changes don’t control your future. Wishing everyone long-term stability and growth.

Easier said than done for most!

6 month window is usually the target and many will hit that easy. So it's tough.

It’s tough when you’re just starting out. Wishing the best for junior developers out there too 🙏

That's cute! When junior developers WITH AI are replacing seniors WITH juniors.

I love this perspective. I’d love to hear more about ways you built financial stability being employment

Expect 6 months, plan for 1 year, reality might be 2 years. O(n^2)?

I really don’t want to tell the Court that I am seeking an extension for personal reason, what would be a good reason to provide? I clearly don’t want to misstate anything but is there some general, vague language that can be used?

Hello! I’m based in NYC and looking for my next role. I work in the digital strategy/brand strategy space. I would like to keep my base of at least $180k (is this reasonable if I look for Director positions too?) Would love to land something soon before we hit the holiday season. Do you think what I am looking for is reasonable?

Serious question from a happy software engineer, what do you all love about your work/actually enjoy doing during working hours?

I'll start; I'm privileged enough to have been given the opportunity to work and learn deeply on Linux and Kubernetes, and I get to tinker and play with them all day. Problem solving with them is a "fun" part of my job.

Of course most things aren't roses and sunshine, but I'd love to hear the positive parts of what you are doing, or what you like to do at work.

Trying to transition and looking for a general progression of how you would go from essentially zero to entry level job as quickly as possible?

Thanks in advance!

Is it common to negotiate software engineer salary at smaller companies? I know it’s common at FAANG, but what about for companies with around 200 engineers? I have a counter offer from my current company and on-site interviews scheduled for end of July with google and Amazon, but I’d prefer to go with the smaller local company if I can negotiate the salary (from offer letter) up another 5% or so.

I have seen they are hiring for many roles and am curious to hear about their experience. In particular, I would like to hear about software engineer roles. Currently I work on database engine C++ code and have seen some roles that indicate continuing down this stream would be possible with my skillset.

Hi all - just joining and looking for some guidance! I am currently in an IT internship position (making pretty solid money considering) and following this summer I will stay on part time during my senior year (discussing a full-time job offer after already). Does anyone have any advice for a junior C++ engineer. Or do companies generally don't hire a specific language. You just have to take on whatever code work is available. Are you specifically hired for a particular tech in your company? Or most of the time you just end up not doing it at all?

So, I've realised there's a problem with developers, a lot of them are coders, not engineers. And another issue, is that, companies don't really care about their progression as far as I'm aware, so what did you guys do in your own time to transition from being a coder to an engineer?

I am trying to figure out how to switch to SWE. I have a masters in civil engineering and have a good background in higher level math. It looks like the better coding boot camps are quite expensive. The alternative is another masters in CS which is the same cost as many boot camps. Any recommendations on picking between a coding boot camp and getting another masters degree in CS? I’m looking to get into the best position possible after getting an education in CS (get a job quick and good pay).

So I've had 2 hiring managers and several recruiters from Amazon reach out to me about applying for some open positions with the company (android). I completed the coding assessment and now they want me to go through a round of 5 hour interviews next week. Is there a good chance I'll be hired if engineering managers are reaching out to me? I'm really not sure how badly I want to work for them and I don't want to be laid off months after being hired on. Anyone know what Amazon hiring is like?
