I get exactly what you’re saying—I’m in that same space too. What’s been helping me is stepping outside my field and taking on roles that aren’t traditional for me, but still align with what I love, which is caring for people.
Things have changed a lot, and honestly, not for the better. I remember a former employer once told me not to stay in the same place too long—he encouraged me to expand my knowledge and explore other industries. That advice stuck with me.
It’s frustrating when you look around and see the reality: my husband never went to college and earns twice as much as I do, despite my degrees and certifications in healthcare. The market is tight and competitive. Many organizations prefer to promote internally, but it’s often just a lateral move with no real increase in pay. Meanwhile, there’s a growing demand for labor—but at the lowest possible cost.
And when you see CEOs coming from completely different industries, like aerospace, stepping into leadership roles in healthcare, it really makes you pause and think.
Many roles can align with your passion—you just have to ask yourself: what do I really want to do?
At some point, we either face where we are or make a change.
Helping people isn’t limited to healthcare. I know someone who left radiology due to burnout and stepped into aerospace with zero experience. Within a year, she was making more money, had better benefits, and became a supervisor. Why? Because she aligned her passion—helping others—with a new path.
Stay open-minded. Your purpose might not look like what you originally planned.
Ask yourself:
• Do I want to be hands-on with patients?
• Work behind the scenes (HIM, compliance, finance)?
• Or explore something completely different?
Times have changed—and the job market is competitive. Use your current role as a stepping stone. Learn, grow, and leverage every opportunity available to you.
Your next level might require a different direction.
Wish I had a job to pick up the extra shifts…
