Self-discipline and emotional regulation. I worked in the force for almost a decade, and my advice is that you should never lose your cool whenever dealing with a civilian, criminal or not. Our line of work will push our physical and mental well-being to the limit. If people do not feel tense when interacting with you, you're going in the right direction.
Self-discipline and moral principles. Whatever it takes to be a good citizen will definitely make a good cop. As long as he or she knows how to implement the law justly and appropriately and never abuses people regardless of race or status, then he or she is a good cop. Of course, a good cop knows the law that he protects, so he must be knowledgeable as well.
Empathy and morality. Remaining unbias in situations and getting to the truth as much as you can before taking any action.
The biggest mistake I've seen cops make is abuse their power. Do not put yourself above the law of above the community you protect
Being a police officer, you will only see things in black and white, and you will see everyone breaking the law before you notice any underlying problems. Just have an open mind and stay in touch with your neighborhood. We appreciate your interest in our views, and with this initial link to us, you'll make a fantastic officer.
Remember that your job is to serve the community, which means that they should come before your ego. If you find yourself tempted to call someone out for being a jerk, resist the urge and just let them be a jerk. Instead of escalating a situation just because you can, defuse it.
Exercise awareness and metacognition. You then choose whether to respond and how to do so. There are no restrictions; only options. Emotionally, you are either in the driver's seat and in control, or you are in the backseat and under the power of others.
You'll frequently encounter some of the worst attitudes and characters, as well as folks suffering through the worst day of their lives. Do not become demoralized by it. The majority of people in the world will still be decent and helpful, but since you won't hear from them, your perception of society may become distorted. Keep it real with regular folks.
In the face of maltreatment and difficulty, you will need to be exceedingly patient and adhere strictly to the rules at all times. Be mindful that you are the police department's public face and are being observed even when you are not on duty.
Doing what you are supposed to do. Not turning a blind eye. Be open-minded and do not take the law into your own hands.
Having thick skin… If you allow others words and actions to control your emotions then they own you.
