If i want to get into tax (3yrs in family law) and I have no accounting background, is getting a tax llm the best (or is it the only) way to get started? Any recommendations?

Can probably transition into a role in estate planning fairly easily w. no llm. Might need one if you want to do like M&A or international tax at a firm or big4

Depends on what kind of firm you’re targeting. For biglaw, in this market, if you have connections at firms, leverage the network but you’ll have to start as a 1st year, and it’ll be an uphill battle getting a job. Most tax depts at firms are very picky (a frequent complaint from partners is that a lot of summer associates are just not “smart enough” for tax, whatever that means).

Otherwise, top grades at NYU LLM are probably needed, and you’ll need to do well at their on campus interview program, but from what I hear, a lot of firms are cutting their 1st year hiring sizes, so it’ll be a gamble to get into biglaw tax for either option.

Has anyone dealt with stuffing allocation in a non-hedge fund context? It seems even in the HF world the law is fuzzy in using aggregate reverse 704c principles in stuffing allocations. Like, sure, the market is there but no authority really blessed it (other than some Cravath partner’s article in Tax Notes in 2013). If we are talking asset class that isn’t really like marketable securities but might be able to treat it similarly solely by virtue of, say, valuation on a quarterly basis (contd)
