I want to hear from you partners at small/boutique law firm shops about 30~ size. Why would you hire a junior associate or a fresh grad? What are you looking for in terms of their profitability and what are your plans with them? Asking for a friend because I’m a rising 2nd year associate in a litigation law firm and I changed area so I don’t know anything and dumb as hell.

I can think of three things.. they probably have to all three be true in order for the hire to work out. They can nicely fill a gap, such as assisting a more senior attorney with their workload, they are a little lion and I trust that I will be able to grow them to work independently on their own caseload, and cultural fit for the firm.

This applies to small teams in larger firms as well.

Because we need lawyers at all levels of experience in order to keep bills reasonable for mid-level clients while still getting the work done. Also, we usually don’t have recruiter fees for juniors, since recruiters often don’t assist juniors.

Really depends on the firm, but my 40 attorney firm has a culture of hiring people fresh out of law school and training them. Then there’s a 7 year track to partnership.
We look at it as an investment, but also generally if you can keep an associate busy, they make more money than they cost.

helpful

Because s smaller firm won’t pay them very much.

Hi All! I recently started my own Private Equity firm. Searching for any big do’s, dont’s, or hard lessons you learned along the way. Do any veteran entrepreneurs/PE partners or staff members have advice they would like to pass down? I know early on in my consulting career there are many things I wish I could go back and tell myself.

As always, thank you all! 🐟

Any advice on how to deal with a partner/boss who is shifting all responsibility to me with zero guidance, no mentoring, and an unwillingness to discuss the issues? What do you do when you feel the goalpost has been/is being moved re: billable requirements? Like there's a spoken vs unspoken? I chose this job based on billables vs salary and what I'm being told I'm expected to do now is 20-30% (at least) > than what was initially agreed upon. Given my other life responsibilities, this is creating a huge strain & I feel like this is slowly getting harder & harder on my spouse & kids. I'm grateful to have lots of good work but not sure how to course correct.
