I want to leave my firm, but my contract has a clawback provision where I have to repay my sign-on bonus if I leave before the two-year mark. I’m at 18 months, and I’m miserable, but I don’t have $20k sitting in a bank account to pay them back. I’ve heard that some firms will buy out these clauses to land a top candidate, but I don’t know how to bring that up. Is a sign-on buyout a standard thing recruiters can negotiate?

Depending on how niche your area is and how long you’ve been working, you can have a lot of power to negotiate almost anything. However, going forward make sure to read the callback provision because 12 months is usually industry standard so unfortunately sounds like it was missed the first time, but hopefully this can just be a lesson going forward.

Also to remember between interviewing and conflicts, it can sometimes take up to six months plus you can request a delayed start so you might be able to push it out six months without much effort and then it’s just a non-issue

Firms do not always enact these clawbacks. And, it is common for the new firm to pay a bonus to cover it if they do. I would interview and get to offer stage and then negotiate.

I got an offer at Meta as a 3-mo contingent CSM that pays 2x what I make now.

Two pros: 1) Making the jump from a non-tech agency role to FAANG can be tough, so this is a great oppo in that aspect.
2) I'm living in SF on a non-tech salary, so the pay increase would be incredible.

It’s possible I could move into a similar role @ Meta once this expires, but to be safe, I'd need to start the job hunt again asap.

Thoughts on the pivot & how valuable a short-stint at Meta is for future job hunt?

I have an interview for an in house position (only attorney) at a small non-profit focused on conservation easements. I am a transactional associate at a mid sized law firm. The prospect of freedom from the billable hour and contributing to meaningful work are the draws. The cons are that while the salary at the non-profit would only be slightly less than what I am making now, pay increases and opportunities for advancement will be much less than where I am now. Thoughts on making the shift?

How much stock do you put on benefits? I have two offers with stark differences in benefits. Job 1: role I want, but benefit sucks (2 weeks paternity leave, 20% coinsurance). Job 2: role is okay but higher level and great benefits (16 weeks paternity, 0% coinsurance, 5 more days of vacation). Total comp is the same though. I wonder if I should just focus on role but Job 2 is a large company, so I can move around after 2-3 years I’d expect. Thoughts?

2) Anyone currently working at the companies above with only a BBA?
