I’m also following FIRE and a midlevel associate at a large firm - did you ever consider taking a leave of absence before you hit your savings target? i.e. take a few months off as a break to travel and then come back to biglaw (firm willing, of course)

Don’t have kids or else your number will skyrocket.

Really great piece! Skips the hype, grounded, detailed, motivating and got me thinking. All the best to you!!

What was your savings target? I can't wait to leave big law.

like

Roughly 15x current annual living expenses, but we could probably stretch that into 20x or more if we cut some expenses. I liked BigLaw well enough to stay pretty far into the FIRE journey, as it was working pretty well for me. I also wanted to get close enough to FI that there wasn’t too much pressure on my wife for the final stretch. But I felt less pressure to keep going because she truly wants to stay in BigLaw for a while longer.

How do you all deal with the guilt of leaving a comany/ team? I have been working at Microsoft for 1 year now, and seriously considering moving. I find the code base to be very legacy and I mostly work on obscure bugs that I spend so much time on, mostly due to navigating this large code base and not having much docs to refer to. Hence I find the job slightly unsatisfying, and that I could learn more elsewhere. However, I love the wlb, the team and company culture. The guilt stops my applying.

I have got the ey hr mail stating i should provide him with aadhar card, information sheet and latest resume for a audit and assurance contract for 6 months as iam a semi qualified CA.

Here my question is should i take this opportunity. Cause since this is only for 6 months. After that, what i can do, where should I try to get the job?

In mid size firms, people won't pay as much as big 4 pays.

Should I take it or am I making a mistake by taking this.

Currently a staff in audit - 6 months in. Glad to be learning a lot, and have had a generally positive experience at the firm other than a few interactions, some tough busy season nights. Really been intrigued by TAS/M&A, however, and had a few convos with a senior in TAS i know at the firm. It’s closer to what I studied, but don’t know how to make the jump as it seems an internal transfer could take 6+months/senior rank and a lot of convincing. Is it better to jump firms/has anyone done this?

I left in 2013 after five years in. I have since done everything from selling motorcycles, getting a food prep certificate, doing discovery work, starting a few companies, and getting married to a woman who knew better than to speak to the person I was in my big law days. Could not have made a better decision, but wouldn’t mind that paycheck for a few more months.

I left practice 12 years ago. I became the Director of International Programs at a law school, which was great for a while. But, the bureaucracy eventually got to me. While there, I started a podcast called The Lawyer’s Escape Pod, interviewing lawyers who’d switched careers. And that put me on my new path. I now coach lawyers who want to ditch the traditional work world and start creative or coaching businesses. Never been happier.

I left biglaw after 3 years to a mid-size firm. Took a pay cut but the hours, people, culture and work were so much better I never thought twice about the salary or “prestige.” Ultimately I started 2 very small firms. I am not rich by biglaw standards but I have a very comfortable life and put my kids through college with no debt. 35 years after leaving big law, people are still impressed when I say I started there. I feel like I still had the benefits of the connection w/o the suffering.
