Just got an offer to go back to BL and contemplating it. Left 2 years ago to work in government and love the wl balance. This offer would triple my salary. Not sure what to do.

When looking back on one’s life, no one wishes he or she had spent more time at work or that having lots of money made him or her happier.

P1, thanks for the explanation. Makes sense!

All depends on what is important to you. I left government for BL and now regret it. I never see my family and am stressed all the time. I make way more but what’s the point? It’s all relative to what you want.

Are they offering you a signing bonus that is playing into the decision? If so, be cognizant of the clawback period on the bonus. Some firms will take back some or all of the bonus if you leave within a year or two. Just something to weigh as you make the decision!

No sogn on bonus

There is a reason you took action to get a BL offer. What is that reason?

Being a new hire RE role means you are going to be one of the first people chopped if RE dries up in a recession, which it usually does. Govt is a very safe place to be rn I would not leave it personally.

Working for a senior who is beyond horrible. She talks to you like you’re stupid and makes it sound like you’re absolutely terrible at what you’re doing. She’s made 5 other associates cry during her 5 year career. Got someone fired and made another person quit. It’s known around the office that she can no longer have a female associate, because she talks down to females more than she does males. I came along and thought I could deal with it but she literally makes me want to not log on tomorrow.

I have a direct report who is smart, passionate about her job and can be really innovative. However she carries this enormous weight of responsibility, for needing to do everything, do it right, make sure it's perfect, not trusting colleagues to help. It creates dread and panic and overwhelming workload and a terrible attitude for her and I am speaking with her this week to start to shift her mindset. Any tips in navigating how to let go of this heavy idea of "responsibility"?

Hey ZSers,

I have been selected into ZS for the BTAC role under CCM(Customer-Centric Marketing). My YOE is 3.8 in Cognizant, and the domain is ETL, DW, cloud(AWS).

My question is, ZS is giving a great package compared to what I have in Cognizant (Above 100% hike), and Cognizant is ready to retain me by giving somewhere 50%-60% hike. Will ZS be a good choice for me to switch? In terms of growth, technologies, work, pay. Or should I accept what cognizant is giving and get retained?

I left biglaw after 3 years to a mid-size firm. Took a pay cut but the hours, people, culture and work were so much better I never thought twice about the salary or “prestige.” Ultimately I started 2 very small firms. I am not rich by biglaw standards but I have a very comfortable life and put my kids through college with no debt. 35 years after leaving big law, people are still impressed when I say I started there. Working remotely for a tech co and still can't get over how much more time I get to spend with my kids. To be honest, this alone is worth so much more than money can buy. For those who plan well, I really think exiting can be worth it if family is a priority. It's really helped my marriage also, I'm a lot kinder to my wife with way less stress.

I left practice 12 years ago. I became the Director of International Programs at a law school, which was great for a while. But, the bureaucracy eventually got to me. I now coach lawyers who want to ditch the traditional work world and start creative or coaching businesses. Never been happier.
