I watched a really interesting YouTube video that I’m still reflecting on. The affluence that built Silicon Valley from the ground up was actually defense and it was during wartime. Stanford had an edge on developing cutting edge technology to aide the war and that’s why vc funds started popping up in that area. It gives me some perspective on the backbone of the Mecca of software engineering!

It’s simple. Silicon Valley wasn’t built by luck or just innovation. It was forged by war money and defense needs. Venture capital only followed where the military tech went first. That’s the real backbone. Don’t let the fairy tale blind you.

It’s super true which is a really cool realization to me. I feel more grounded knowing that. It was built on need and expended to what it is now, a mix of finding needs we didn’t know we needed.. and a lot of fluff.. I was always more drawn to solving a need

I'd say that William Shockley moving to the Bay Area in 1956 was more important to Silicon Valley than anything else. Then the Traitorous Eight broke away from Shockley and started a revolution. Those events entrenched the Bay Area as the technology hub of the world more than anything else.

I’ll have to watch a video about him! Now I’m curious

Sounds very interesting! Technology generally has a lot of roots in military use. So many things were developed for that purpose, and through that, it was made available for the average person down the road.

It was. I shared a link to the video below if you want to watch it

Can you share the link to the video?

Thank you!

People also underestimate or even neglect the impact of porn on driving technological innovation.

So, I've realised there's a problem with developers, a lot of them are coders, not engineers. And another issue, is that, companies don't really care about their progression as far as I'm aware, so what did you guys do in your own time to transition from being a coder to an engineer?

I just got a job offer for an Entry Level Software Engineer at Boeing in Saint Louis. The salary is $82,000 with an $8,000 sign on bonus. I was hoping for an offer closer to 90k base and I don’t care too much for a sign on bonus. However, this is a lot more than what I’m making now, and would be my first SWE job. Should I counter? If so, how would I go about doing that? Thanks!

Also posted over in tech bowl. Looking for advice on whether pursue a CS degree. I’m an older guy shifting to SWE. I finished bootcamp last May & about to start my first jr role at Oracle OCI. Late 30’s with a couple of kids. Is it worth it for me to seek a CS degree at this time/soonish? I’m not afraid of the extra work, and would go part time. Wondering if the eventual payoff would worth the effort. Will I level up quicker? Employer has partial tuition reimb.
