I went from agency to in house PR 1.5 years ago (I’m at a prof services firm in nyc). There are no boundaries for communication; everyone is expected to answer emails immediately at all hours and senior people respond in minutes between about 7am-11pm, at minimum. Is this normal in the corporate, non agency world? Not sure if this is just due to the pandemic and WFH, but I was under the impression that in house life would be more chill.

In cases where you have to write emails at off/odd hours, I would use the timed send feature and set it to go out at 8 (or 9am) the next day. IMHO, leadership needs to set this example if they want a healthy boundary for employee’s personal/professional lives. It’s actually illegal in France (and I think Germany is following suit) to send emails after business hours (6pm). To me it’s not good leadership to make yourself visible/available 24/7 because it implies pressure for employees to do the same.

like

No. It really depends on the culture of the company you’re at. I haven’t experienced this in house but I also have a hard boundary on when I’m working and when I’m not. If everything is an emergency, nothing is.

like

Exactly.

In our organization, a lot of people in the senior leadership drop mails in the dead of the night, but they don’t expect a response until the next day.

I kind of get why they do it. They’re caught up with meetings during the day, and it’s easier to quickly sift through the mails in the evening.

I’ve been tempted to respond when I check my mail after hours, but we’re a larger team of recruiters- and I don’t want to set a precedence that would impact my peers.

I don’t mind receiving mails after work hours, but the fact that your organization is expecting you to respond to these mails right away is downright bizarre. You should talk to your lead.

I was also under that impression, and I was wrong. Had a 5 a.m. Slack notifications jarring me awake, 11 p.m. Friday as for “just a few campaign ideas” and the like. Sometimes the devil you know is the best one to work for.
