^false, I just got early promo to SC as an experienced hire
There is no early promo at D
How early was your early promo? (How many years spent as a C)?
Yup it definitely will. I just got promoted a year earlier and the most critical part of that promotion is your ability to staff as an SC. You need a partner/SM that wants to staff you and you need a project that will staff you as an SC. Stick to an S&O project
@OP have the conversation with your counselor now and get a plan in place. They can shop your name around to SM's/PPD's and get your name out there. My counselor during YE calls was able to drop some names that were supporting me
Stay with S&O make sure all the right boxes are checked
Leading work streams and managing analysts is huge, I heard that many times when I was talking to people about early promo. Also if you can show that you led a client relationship, they really like to see that.
Thanks!
1.4 years
Started in December so hence the 1.4
DD2 - is that considered early promo? I feel like if you joined the right time it will take you less than 2 years (which is what typically takes to go from C to SC) to get promoted. I joined in August last year and going up for regular promo next year (FY18). That's like 1.7-ish years
sorry.. it was meant for DD1
OP, if the project isn't too long it's probably a useful experience, network building, and good exposure to another discipline. But when you are trying for an early promotion, everything has to go right that year, including working for your own practice and the partners who will decide your year end.
They had me at 2018, full 2 year YE cycles. The .4 YE one did not count
D4- awesome, thank you SO much! I'm supposed to stay on my current projects through at least September, but they're PMO and are going to count against me. I can join a HC one that will check the boxes for promotion within the next two weeks, but it is HC. Maybe I should take the four months to find a S&O one that will go from October into the next performance year and will support my promotion. What do you think?
I'm also so miserable with my current projects that I have been considering doing the HC one anyways, but training a replacement for my other projects while starting a new one would be more stress than it is worth. Maybe I could get a short-term technical sprint project to do in addition to the PMO ones in the meantime. Thanks, everyone
Very interesting, thanks Dd1. Very good to know! Yep, writing email to counselor now and meeting with a PPD to discuss strategy in a half hour.
Thanks, D5! Just to make sure that I am taking everything into consideration, beyond 1. Leading a work stream, 2. Managing analysts, 3. The project's leadership supporting me, and 4. The project having the money in the budget to staff me at a higher level, and 5. The project being in S&O, is there anything, written or unwritten, that I am missing?
Thanks, Dd1! Ok, so, update: had a very candid chat with a PPD whom I trust and she thinks that I should take the project even though it is HC. We both agreed that my number one priority should be getting off of my current projects in my current account for a bunch of reasons. She was like, if it will impact your promo, just switch to HC. The only issue with that is that my new counselor is S&O and he is great. Honestly, I think that I could have enough factors to still get it, esp if I can show that I would be staffed in a S&O project going forward. The SM on this project is S&O. In a nutshell, my current situation is toxic and in addition to making me miserable, I was dinged for it at year-end bc it wasn't client facing so the longer I stay on it, the worse for me.
