I'd tell them as soon as possible so both parties can plan accordingly.
My thought is that it’s technically being asked as a pregnancy accommodation so I can’t ask too early. I also don’t think it will impact much as I am still working. Just not sure if it’s better to wait until a month before, a few weeks before, etc.
I’d wait until a few weeks out. Before you ask for the accommodation, have a discussion with your OB (ideally they are on board and willing to draft a note if your firm requires it) - with an OB note, they’ll be hard pressed (and total jerks plus have potential liability) as to a “no.” Honestly, you’ll be ramping down and beginning the transition process a month out, and I cannot imagine anyone harassing a very pregnant mama about wanting to work her last month in the comfort of her home. But YMMV - thus the OB on board recommendation.

A month before your due date is part of the presumed disability period in California, so was the date automatically generated by my doctor’s office when I asked for a note after formally announcing around 20 weeks. (And I went completely out, not just remote).
I’d talk to your doctor and see what they think in terms of requesting a pregnancy accommodation, and if they’d support that request now or would want to wait to see how you’re feeling as it gets closer.
