I was in a similar position when I first started and I’m honestly glad I went BDO. My friends at the big 4 get the same job offers, same perks, except I have quite a bit more work/life balance and definitely have a say in my career path. Have already been promoted significantly faster than them and been able to take on more responsibility on clients I actually like (yes, I pick my clients not the other way around). Much better being a big fish in a small sea when it comes to your career growth- they had me emailing and meeting with national partners my first year whereas Big 4 would let manager/partners take care of the more complicated issues. But like the others said, it depends on the city. I’m in Boston but I’m sure every other BDO location may not be as progressive/room for growth. If you want public, make sure it’s a BDO office that has a decent amount of public clients and talk to people there to see their thoughts. Every company is different location by location.
BDO Houston sucks! Don’t go there. I left 2 years ago after going there from big 4 and I still keep in touch with a few people and the politics and overall management seems even worse now from what I hear. If you are going to do public accounting, tough it out at a big 4. Don’t be fooled by people who say big 4 and mid market get same offers when they are ready to leave. I’ve worked with recruiters who have said some companies won’t even look at your resume if you don’t have big 4 experience. In my opinion, specifically for the Houston market (this may not apply in other markets), big 4 on your resume beats mid market! On the flip side there are some employers (usually smaller companies) who prefer mid market experience but I think the demand for big 4 experience outweighs mid market.
Would you rather play in the MLB or single A ball?
Ah, I had the same situation and had my acceptance to BDO all ready to go before my KPMG office interview. I did really like both. I ended up going with KPMG because all the partners at the BDO office in my city came from big 4. It seemed that if I needed an exit strategy, KPMG would provide more options. I made my decision based on this.
Go big 4. BDO loves sloppy seconds.
Pick KPMG.
@BDO2 where, Fairbanks, Alaska?
BDO in Houston is terrible. The people who came over from UHY are sub-par. Pick GT over BDO. KPMG has a great culture.
Big4 all the way
KPMG Houston is tough! Be prepared to work
Just go big 4 and you can always go mid tier later. Or vice versa, buy might as well get big4 done with.
You def want big four. There are so many more opportunities for people who come out of big four.
Big 4. Unless you ask someone at mid tier, then they will tell you BDO lmao
KPMG ..no question.
KPMG
Big 4, BDO is having growing pains
Arthur Andersen all the way
Depends on the city. I’m not sure anyone even knows if there’s a KPMG office here. BDO office is bigger than all the big 4 offices here.
go big 4. get on resume. then leave and go bdo or smaller to work w great people and clients. big 4 isnt so great but is def resume builder
Start Big 4, then leave for BDO. I started at PwC and left for BDO. Much happier at BDO, I actually have a life.
KPMG! I left KPMG for a smaller firm and it was the worst decision of my career.
