This is not my area of expertise as a lawyer, but, my guess is, as long as they can show it was unrelated to your medical LOA (easiest way would be to show they were discussing it before you gave them notice), it's legal.
Any time you are considering something like this, you need to have every mention of it in writing to avoid an outcome like this
