Wanted to highlight Prudential Financial’s hiring practices. They rescinded my offer once I attempted to negotiate the salary. The official reason given was that I didn’t “sound excited enough”.
They then admittedly gave the offer to someone who was less qualified. There were other red flags throughout the job offer process that the HR team should overall be ashamed of.

OP. This is called claim of right. You will get a deduction on your return this year or you can amend prior year. You will not get back your social taxes (sorry!)
It is under IRC 1341. More detail here. If you google it you will find a lot more relevant detail:

+1 of support here. Had to pay Deloitte back ~$6K when I left for Google, but got a little over $5.5K back when I wrote it off on my taxes.
You pay back gross
But you can deduct it from your income
Ie if you got a 5k sign on, got 3500
But you left, and paid back the 5k, you can deduct 5k from your income
This is how my accountant explained it to me, but let me know if I butchured it
Taxation is theft. Will just leave this here haha
Yup. But you eventually get everything back when you file taxes.
You get to write the bonus off as wages returned to your employer. It’ll result in a pretty large return.
OP, if you have to pay back the bonus, then don’t file it as income when you do your taxes.
