I'm actually making the exact same and am also turning 40 this year. MS finance, job is AVP level. It's a good amount for my family, just 3 years ago I was making $72K and thought that was good (lower COL area). But now I'm focused, yet again, on getting to the next salary band or switching companies. My manager wants to promote me, but may have his hands tied due to company policy of working for 3 years before getting the next band. Silly, considering my total years of full time work experience, but this department was new to me to learn, so I figure once I'm a whiz in this particular area, the next promotion will come.
I'm 46, been a professional for 15 years. I make 112k. Same job for the last 13 years 117k first year in tech is pretty damn good.
With a salary like that you are doing better than most of the world’s population
Perhaps you should speak to PWCs hiring team to determine why they felt as though this individual had skills that drove them to hire them.
Now you’re just reaching. Not sure at what, but reaching nonetheless.
Equating it to age is a losing battle. I think you're making solid money.
Neither me or my spouse make six figures and we are in our 50’s. To most it seems low but consider this. We have no student loan since we graduated back in the 90’s and my graduate school was paid for by my company. We bought our house way back in late 90’s and it’s paid off. Our area turned into HCOL as our home is valued at 4x what we paid for it now. Due to last 10+ years of boom market and no mortgage, our networth (retirement and personal investment) is well of 7-figures. Most of our income just goes into savings, investment and vacations. My spouse been with the same company since graduation, going on almost 30 years and I just celebrated my 12th anniversary with my current company. We both don’t care about promotions. Can’t compete with younger folks, don’t have the will or the strength.
Good timing with everything 😃
Also so great to see someone who’s chosen to grow with the same organization. I worked and grew with the same firm for close to 17 years (in India).
Here in Canada I’ve been told that I need to keep jumping to grow!
Considering the job market and the troubles of finding my first job, I’m not looking forward to that life!
Depends on your industry. I just turned 38 and was making 171k with bonus option (would be higher but no raise last year) but I'm in tech consulting. I was laid off in June so my new salary will be 162k with bonus option and sign on.
I also have two graduate degrees but I don't think it matters for what I'm doing. (MBA/MS-IS)
It’s never enough. No one on this planet thinks they make enough money. Most people just complain but don’t put in the effort to to make more.
I know 40 year olds who make more and some that make less.
As someone who just turned 43, where do I sing up for the 110k?
It might seem low for 14 YOE but each of us have our own journey. Compare salaries within your field and companies. Loyalty isn’t paid in $$, so switching companies might help you get to a higher range. Might be too late to switch fields but consider it as an option if you want to try!
Think longer term. I am 38 with 12YoE. Spent most of it as an independent contractor earning £200k from mid-20s (this is good in the UK). Have now decided to go perm and am on £150k which has been a huge adjustment but am okay with that as my progression has been quick and am now on a partner track so will surpass these numbers soon enough
Pro
Yes, on the surface, with the YOE and the degree, $110k is low. However, hopefully with you switching to a new industry, the trajectory will point higher up.
Don’t feel bad I am 43 and have no more income or friends left due to getting severely ill last 3 years. Have to start from zero again. I have a bachelors in finance and trading background but don’t want to work that high stress of the position, would do supportive roles however been sending resumes with zero replies . I’m fucked
This is something I saw on a YT video. Try educating people about investing or how to get into the trade. It’s a side gig and you continue looking for employment.
You can also make master spreadsheets and upload them for sale. Things like home budgets, expense trackers etc. You’ll be surprised how many people don’t know how to do the most basic of stuff and will just pay to download a template. It won’t be massive income but it’ll be something at least.
12 years of professional exp. 40, no college degree and I make 90k
I’m 40 and I was making $150k in my home country (India, I converted my INR to CAD).
Now I’m in Canada starting over and I’ll probably make less than half of my cushy high paying job back home. And mind you, you get way more bang for your buck in India.
What’s my point? Everything is relative!
Comparison will get you nowhere.
Are you being paid your worth? If you believe the answer is yes, then be happy. If no, then negotiate or switch.
Yeah it was 😂 but we got an opportunity to move to Canada and my husband was earning 40k there and 130k here. And I figured I could make good money here eventually. So we took the trade off and moved 😃
Bad timing yeah. But I guess it’ll get better sometime!
I’m 1 year into a career pivot from public education into tech. I’m in the learning and development space
DM me and we can chat
What’s your plan?
My plan is to land another job this year, something hybrid, doing LXP or ID for a top company, or Learning Program Manager at midtier company.
It took me longer to get out of the restaurant biz but I am over 40 with an MBA and make $60k,...
I have over 20 years of bar and restaurant experience and left the industry completely a couple of years ago. I make 90k with no degree and I’m 40
