I'm 39 and live on Long Island, NY. Been coding my whole life but was only able to go back to school and finish my CS degree in 2022. A friend of mine got me a job at a small company he worked for that paid $60k, and I was there for three years until this past October when I was laid off because my position was outsourced to the Philippines. Been looking for work but haven't found anything and all I see are stories of juniors starting at like $100k. Am I just completely screwed?

I'm a relatively junior data engineer (2yoe), the only other engineer (senior) that trained me left about a 6 months ago and I negotiated a nice raise for the extra responsibilities.

My performance reviews have been stellar, but my manager is starting to look to hire a senior to help me deliver projects as we do lack capacity right now.

I feel like I might be missing an opportunity to ask for a promotion and hire a junior instead.
