I’m a CPA with 11yrs experience.

I’ve recently decided to go back to school for a masters degree in Physics. Doing so to pursue my childhood passion for the sciences.

Is anyone looking for a CPA to work a 30hr work week with my experience?

Am I a lost cause? I’m doing this it’s just a matter of how I’m gonna pull it off.

Here is what a tax senior manager I worked with at Deloitte once told me when she went from full time to part-time: your pay is reduced but you still have 100% of the admin and CPE requirement.

Have you tried talking to your firm / counselor? There may be options to work part time at PwC. I know it has been done at EY, although can’t say I’ve seen it done for people transitioning out of accounting as a whole

like

Yes at small firms without a doubt. But it depends. What area of practice are you in? Tax? Audit?

like

I’d imagine you could do a flexible work arrangement with your firm for a comp reduction. If not, plenty of other firms would happily take you on a FWA I’m sure

Good job. I'm curious, what are you planning on doing with a masters in physics? I was always good in physics, but stayed away from it because my high school and college always pushed for accounting. I always wondered what I could do if I went back for my masters in physics. I'm 42 now, and feel the shipped has sailed for me.

like

Well fyi I’m 37 so the ship may have sailed for myself as well. But I’m jumping off the dock and swimming toward it

I’d rather die drowning than to wonder what if for the next 30yrs

And I’m planning to try to go into the very high demand areas. Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning models are very math intensive so they hire some math and physics graduates. I’m also considering something in quantum computing. But more realistically I’ll also be happy with something in the defense sector or the semiconductor industry. There is some nano scale work to produce those silicon chips and they hire physicists as well

Go for it! I was a chem major right out of high school but life pushed me into accounting. Not too mad about it cuz I enjoy both but would love to know where I would be if I had stuck to Chemistry after all these years.

Physics is basically applied mathematics. It’s hard math. Really hard.

Yeah I didn’t just roll out of bed and think “hey yknow what would be cool”

I do know how hard the math is. I have no clue if I’m going to be able to get to my end goal. But I need to take that chance.

My understanding is that I really just need to learn how to think in a multidimensional complex plane in a probabilistic manner that involved relative changes in the variables

I’ve noticed it isn’t the math we’re all familiar with that is going to be the hard part (although it is hard)

It’s really the Hamiltonian spaces and hermitian spaces that are absolutely next level shit. Linear algebra and math proofs on steroids man

Plsase i need it , but i am the new comer from Ethiopia i have many years experience but it is out side of Canada , do i get a chance or noy???

I'm a non-traditional CD analyst working in a niche industry (gambling)

My experience is as follows: BIG4 Audit > FP&A (CPG) > CD analyst (1 year)

I like my role (sourcing, modelling and strategy integration), however I don't see myself working in this industry long term. Without a generalist IB background, are my chances of transitioning over to a different Industry low? If so, is there anything I can learn or do (excluding IB)?

Thanks

Which offer should I accept? Currently staff 2 at big 4 in Tax with CPA license. I want to leave tax ASAP. Both are public companies +1B in revenue and same salary. Offer 1 - staff revenue accountant so reading contracts, speaking with the sales team and legal team, a lot of work at the end of the months to close books and reconcile transactions to make sure we are ASC 606 compliant. This track usually leads to director of revenue. Offer 2 - internal audit staff so SOX and compliance projects.
