I’m a finance student who is in his second year of college and I’ve been wondering if is worth it to get a dual degree in accounting and finance? or should I just stick to finance? I’ve been working in a bank too to build experience to when I graduate. I don’t know if a dual degree would open more doors and lead me to better opportunities

Stick to accounting and maybe minor in finance.

like

Does it take longer to get a dual degree? If so, you may be better off doing one degree and spending the time getting a Master’s degree or industry credentials instead. Bachelor’s degrees typically don’t matter that much—they get you in the door for sure, but it matters less what the degree was in. I don’t think it would give you that big of an edge to have a finance/accounting undergrad degree versus just a finance degree. What kind of jobs do you want, though? If they’re heavy in accounting, and if it’s not much extra work, then go for it.

like

I wouldn’t double major. Get a minor in one.

like

If it doesn’t take extra time and it interests you, why not. Accounting is the backbone of finance and it will only help you. I use what I learned in my accounting classes freshman year of college every single day of my career.

I majored in finance and Econ was one class away from getting a major in accounting as well, but I hated accounting so much that I didn’t do it. I regretted it later because it was only one class I could have suffered through. I also didn’t go the account route so it didn’t hurt me professionally.

No one has ever checked my degree. Just say you have a dual degree.

If you work at any financial institution or get FINRA licenses, they do background checks. They will check your degree.

At what point does the value of a degree fall off? I'm in my early 30s, and have five years of experience, and work on a very theoretically interesting project. I believe I'm on track to promotion in the next year. So, I could put in a year of full time school to check the box off, but I'd be sacrificing hobbies and social life (not to mention cost). Is this FOMO or is there real opportunity here?
